Civic Data Analyst (Sustainable Mobility)
Job Description
Durham, NC, hybrid Civic Data Analyst focusing on Sustainable Mobility at Alta Planning + Design, salary range USD 65,000 to 76,000 per year.
Responsibilities
- Act as a technical lead and analyst across multiple disciplines, project types, and geographic regions.
- Create prototype, repeatable analyses using R, Python, and GIS to advance place-based sustainable transportation outcomes.
- Cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset in analytics through staff training, tool development, research, and custom web applications.
- Collaborate across Alta's disciplines to identify analytics needs and priorities, promoting a culture of data-informed decision making.
- Lead the creation of new analytical products aligned with the firm's goals and multidisciplinary practice.
- Partner with planners, designers, and engineers on data analysis and visualization to deliver scalable mobility insights.
- Explore data analysis and visualization components within client projects and R&D, applying advanced methodologies.
- Develop innovative analytics to address mobility and access challenges and communicate findings through reports, memos, and presentations.
- Identify labor-intensive processes and pursue automation opportunities to create value across the organization.
- Contribute to projects such as active transportation plans, safety action plans, complete streets, safe routes to school, new mobility plans, and economic benefit studies.
- Maintain a community-centered perspective to help communities tell narratives about people, meet multifaceted goals, prepare for change, and advance equitable transportation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in statistics, mathematics, computer science or another quantitative field with demonstrated transportation planning experience, or a bachelor’s degree in planning, landscape architecture, environmental sciences, or engineering with experience in software development or data science.
- Proficiency in Python or R, and SQL.
- Strong quantitative analysis skills, including data analysis, cross-tabulation, and interpretation, with the ability to apply data-driven techniques to inform evidence-based planning and design decisions.
- Solid understanding of databases, GIS, coding, and advanced transportation planning knowledge.
- GIS proficiency across open-source tools (PostGIS, QGIS, geopandas) and ESRI products (ArcGIS Pro, Spatial Analyst, Network Analyst).
- Ability to create informative data visualizations through code using libraries such as D3, ggplot, matplotlib, plotly, and kepler.gl.
- Experience designing, implementing, and documenting analytical solutions using code; capable of executing analyses entirely with code.
- Familiar with data specifications and acronyms such as OSM, MDS, GTFS, GBFS, GPS, CDS.
- Proficient with MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, among similar productivity tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
