Job Description

The Data Analyst role supports Intuitive Machines’ Lunar Data Analytics group, working with data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) and the Shadow Cam Science Operations Center (SOC). The position is based in Phoenix, AZ and focuses on lunar data processing, analysis, and information delivery for research communications and outreach.

Role Overview

As a Data Analyst, you will contribute to the production of lunar digital terrain models and support science operations by processing and analyzing remotely sensed planetary imagery. You will also compile and distill results for use in research papers, posters, and conference talks, and help enable education and public outreach activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce high-resolution lunar digital terrain models using SocetSet and SocetGXP by BAE Systems.
  • Assist LROC and ShadowCam science team members with data processing tasks to support data production, research, and exploration.
  • Maintain and develop tools and procedures for data processing and analysis.
  • Compile and distill information from remotely sensed planetary images for inclusion in research papers, posters, and talks presented at meetings.
  • Support education and public outreach efforts through events on campus, off-site, and virtually for audiences ranging from preschool through adults.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator, Science Operations Center Manager, or RDR Manager.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (examples: planetary science, GIS and remote sensing, or computer science) and 2–5 years of relevant professional experience, with a minimum of 2 years experience.
  • Basic knowledge of remote sensing techniques and data.
  • Programming or scripting experience using Python, bash, R, or Matlab.
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organization and documentation skills.
  • Detail-oriented work habits while working with large data sets.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify problems and develop mitigation procedures.
  • Experience performing or aiding research activities, including generating data, performing analysis, and interpreting results.
  • Knowledge of statistics and data characterization and classification methods.

Additional Technical Knowledge

  • Knowledge of image processing concepts and techniques.
  • Experience using AI/ML for image classification, feature extraction, and/or GeoAI.
  • Experience with planetary data sets, especially LROC or ShadowCam.
  • Experience with photogrammetry.
  • Experience with databases, especially PostgreSQL/PostGIS queries.
  • Experience with the UNIX command line.
  • Experience with Imaging Software for Imagers and Spectrometers from USGS and/or Ames Stereo Pipeline.

Working Environment

  • In-person office setting.
  • Ability to effectively use computers, including 3D stereo monitors, for extended periods to input, review, and retrieve information.
  • Open and shared office space.
