Job Description

Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc. (AMA) is seeking two part-time, remote Data Analysts to support NASA’s Earth Action Program. This role contributes scientific and data analysis support to the Wildland Fires Program and the FireSense Project through evaluation of research, transformation of NASA data products, and support for data pipelines and field data organization.

Based in Hampton, VA with a remote work arrangement, the position supports ongoing efforts under the Research, Science, and Engineering Services (RSES) contract.

What you’ll do

  • Evaluate published scientific papers to identify cutting-edge research and key science questions for the NASA Wildland Fires Program and FireSense Project.
  • Support data evaluation and analysis to ensure program and project science goals are addressed.
  • Convert NASA collected L0 data into L2/L3 data products using data from various sensors.
  • Account for instrument limitations and analysis assumptions during data processing.
  • Identify and implement data quality control corrections and propagate uncertainties through produced products.
  • Support the collection and organization of field data across the portfolio.
  • Support development and dissemination of data pipelines and algorithms for NASA facility instrumentation.

What you bring

  • BS with current graduate studies in earth system science, environmental science, meteorology, or a related field.
  • Involvement with NASA Science Activation and NASA GLOBE programs.
  • Experience with PM2.5 small sensors, including building, intercomparing, installation and maintenance, data retrieval, formatting, and analysis.
  • Proficiency with air quality data analysis and integration of ground networks and satellite data.
  • Working knowledge of FireSense field campaigns for airborne and ground data.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and with accountability in a virtual environment.
  • Ability to perform data analysis of spatiotemporal datasets using GIS software.
  • Strong time management plus organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with scientific software including Igor Pro, Python, and GIS.
  • Experience with FireSense campaign data such as MASTER, AVIRIS, and sounding and ground data.
  • Proficiency with instrumentation and tools used by the NASA FireSense program, including air quality small sensors, Graw radiosondes, and hyperspectral imagers.
  • Ability to ingest, process, and analyze spectral data.
  • Ability to work with large datasets in multiple formats and across multiple platforms.

Enhancing qualifications

  • Experience with prescribed fires, including different ignition techniques and ecosystem impacts.
  • Wildland Firefighter 2 certifications or beyond.

Compensation and work arrangement

  • Pay range: $32/hr to $36/hr (USD)
  • Job type: Part time
  • Work arrangement: Part-time, remote positions supporting the Earth Action Program under the RSES contract
