Job Description

ExxonMobil’s Low Carbon Solutions (LCS) IT team is seeking a Data Engineer to create scalable data pipelines and a physical data platform that supports multiple LCS business use cases. The position focuses on designing cloud-based data solutions, delivering batch and real-time pipelines, and maintaining governance, security, quality, and reliable data movement.

Role Overview

In this role, you will support the LCS IT team by building scalable data pipelines and expanding a physical data platform foundation used across multiple Low Carbon Solution business use cases. You will design and implement modern cloud-based data solutions in alignment with LCS business and IT architectures, and work with IT and business partners to deliver datasets and data products that meet stakeholder needs.

What You Will Do

  • Lead and participate in gathering complex, often unique business requirements by defining business problems and data requirements.
  • Design, build, and maintain robust batch and/or real-time data pipelines for ingesting, processing, and transforming large-scale datasets.
  • Develop, maintain, document, and optimize physical data models and data flow diagrams to support transactional solutions, analytics, reporting, and business workflows.
  • Integrate APIs, modern integrations, and data sources to ensure reliable, monitored, and efficient data movement across systems.
  • Profile data sources and collaborate with cross-functional teams to structure, clean, and deliver data for consumers including applications, visualization tools, and end users.
  • Ensure adherence to data classification and security access through appropriate storage, data management practices, and query optimization for efficient access.
  • Build enterprise-ready data solutions with strong data governance, quality, and reliability standards.
  • Stay current with evolving data engineering technologies and apply improvements to existing pipelines.
  • Integrate standards for source code management, work item and project tracking, DevOps, and enterprise architecture frameworks.
  • Mentor Data Engineers Associate and provide guidance and support, including support for contractors to follow ExxonMobil standards and architectures.

Responsibilities

  • Help build scalable data pipelines and expand the physical data platform as a key foundation for multiple LCS business use cases.
  • Design and implement modern cloud-based data solutions aligned with LCS business and IT architectures.
  • Collaborate with IT and business teams to deliver high-quality datasets and data products aligned with stakeholder needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent practical experience delivering data solutions).
  • 7+ years of professional experience in data engineering, data platform development, or related areas.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and SQL for data processing and pipeline development.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining scalable data pipelines (batch and streaming).
  • Advanced knowledge of data modeling, ETL/ELT design patterns, and data architecture best practices.
  • Experience with cloud data platforms and distributed data processing frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with relational and/or NoSQL database technologies.
  • Experience implementing data quality, validation, and monitoring frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for data workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Azure data services such as Azure Data Factory, Synapse, and Databricks.
  • Experience with Snowflake or other equivalent data warehouse or data platforms.
  • Strong SQL expertise including performance tuning and security model implementation.
  • Experience with big data technologies such as Spark or Kafka.
  • Familiarity with data orchestration tools such as Airflow.
  • Experience integrating observability and monitoring into data pipelines.
  • Knowledge of data governance, lineage, and metadata management tools.
  • Prior experience working with Python-based data processing or optimization workflows.
  • Experience with Palantir Foundry, Ontologies, or similar enterprise data platforms.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in fast-paced Agile environments.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across technical and business teams.
