Data Engineer

ProFocus is supporting an established organization as they strengthen their data foundation and improve the reliability and traceability of information used across the business. This contract Data Engineer role is focused on making enterprise data movement more dependable, accessible, and trustworthy, with improvements spanning ETL/ELT pipelines, data quality, and monitoring with failure recovery.

The work will be hands-on across operational systems, the enterprise data platform, reporting tools, and downstream consumers. You will help stabilize data flows, add automated quality controls, and establish sustainable engineering practices that support modernization over time.

Key Responsibilities

• Apply hands-on engineering expertise to understand, stabilize, and improve how data moves between operational systems, the enterprise data platform, reporting tools, and downstream consumers.
• Trace data flows and document data lineage.
• Strengthen ETL/ELT pipelines and integrations.
• Implement automated data-quality controls.
• Improve monitoring, alerting, documentation, and failure recovery processes.
• Work with existing integrations, legacy systems, undocumented dependencies, manual processes, and varying data quality.
• Increase clarity and reliability of the current environment while building sustainable engineering practices for future modernization.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on data engineering, data integration, or related engineering experience.
• Strong SQL skills with experience working with complex relational data.
• Production experience with modern cloud data platforms; Snowflake experience strongly preferred.
• Experience designing and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines.
• Experience with APIs, files, databases, batch integrations, and other enterprise integration patterns.
• Experience implementing automated data-quality checks and reconciliation processes.
• Experience with pipeline orchestration, monitoring, logging, and failure recovery.
• Strong understanding of data modeling, transformation, and source-to-target mapping.
• Strong documentation and technical communication skills.
• Preferred: experience in retail, supply chain, inventory, merchandising, e-commerce, loyalty, or financial data environments.

Compensation & Engagement

• Contract role
• Target pay: $60 to $75 per hour, may vary based on experience
• Expected duration: 6-12 months, with an option to extend
