Data Engineer

Western Governors University is seeking a Data Engineer to design and deliver reliable data pipelines and reporting capabilities that support Data Analysts, Data Scientists, and internal business teams. In this onsite role in Salt Lake City, UT, you will build ETL/ELT processes and keep data acquisition, transformation, and publication running with an emphasis on security, accessibility, and data quality.

What You’ll Do

• Develop and build ETL/ELT data pipelines to support data analysis and maintain an optimal pipeline architecture.
• Assemble large, complex data sets aligned to functional and non-functional business requirements, while ensuring data is kept separated and secure across multiple cloud environments.
• Ingest and transform structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data from sources including relational databases, NoSQL databases, external APIs, JSON, XML, delimited files, and other inputs.
• Monitor and maintain ETL/ELT jobs by troubleshooting load issues, identifying bugs, applying fixes, and performing pipeline audits to support data quality.
• Produce ad-hoc and analytical reports for internal users and build complex reports and dashboards in Cognos and Tableau.
• Manage change requests and ticket queues for analytical reports and ETL/ELT jobs, including data and technology discovery for new sources and third-party applications.
• Collaborate in an agile environment to deliver efficient, effective data pipelines and reporting solutions on schedule.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 2 years of experience in Data Engineering, Data Integration, Big Data, Business Intelligence, or Software Engineering.
• Ability to analyze and understand data sources and design a data model for data capture and ETL/ELT.
• Experience with relational SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Knowledge of object-oriented/object function scripting languages such as Python, Java, and Scala.
• Knowledge and experience with big data tools including Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Databricks, and related technologies.
• Clear communication and the ability to work independently and cross-functionally, using industry best practices for code development, testing, implementation, and documentation.

Location, Schedule, and Salary

• Location: Salt Lake City, UT (onsite)
• Schedule: Full-time, in-office, five days per week
• Schedule details: Full-Time Regular position working 40 standard weekly hours
• Salary: USD 98,300 - 147,400 per year
