Digital Senior Machine Learning Engineer
Job Description
UPS is expanding its data-driven capabilities with a Digital Senior Machine Learning Engineer based in Alpharetta, GA, onsite. The role centers on designing, building, testing, and delivering production-scale ML and AI agent systems, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to uncover automation opportunities and measure impact through production-ready trials.
Responsibilities
- Convert data science prototypes into production-grade ML and AI agent systems using suitably complex datasets and representations.
- Evaluate and implement ML algorithms and tools to create novel systems and processes powered by ML and AI, aligned with business needs.
- Design and implement end-to-end ML and AI agent workflows and analysis tools to scale the development of new models, in both batch and streaming contexts.
- Develop and evolve ML models and software to enable state-of-the-art intelligent systems, following best practices across engineering and modeling lifecycles.
- Build and maintain AI agent systems that autonomously or semi-autonomously perform multi-step tasks, access enterprise data and APIs, and support human-in-the-loop decisions when appropriate.
- Extend existing ML libraries and frameworks with the latest Data Science and ML advances for enterprise use.
- Set up, configure, and support scalable cloud components that host prediction model transactions.
- Plan and execute experiments, evaluations, and success metrics for ML models and AI agents, covering performance, reliability, accuracy, and business impact.
- Implement monitoring, logging, and observability for ML systems and AI agents to ensure ongoing performance and traceability.
- Integrate data from authoritative internal and external sources to form the foundation of new Data Products that deliver insights supporting business outcomes.
- Collaborate with Designers, Architects, Software Engineers, Data Scientists, and Data Engineers to deliver ML products and systems.
Requirements
- Experience designing and building large, data-intensive solutions using distributed computing within a multi-line business environment.
- Knowledge of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, including Generative AI frameworks (Keras, PyTorch), libraries (scikit-learn), and cloud-AI technologies to streamline ML/AI development.
- Strong experience establishing scalable, cost-effective end-to-end solution components to support batch and live streaming prediction transactions.
- Proven ability to develop and productionize ML models such as classification/regression, NLP, and deep learning models into product features.
- Experience designing and implementing AI agent or agent-like systems, including task orchestration, tool usage, prompt engineering, workflow automation, and integration with enterprise systems.
- Experience deploying highly scalable software and model optimization to support millions of transactions or a large user base.
- Track record creating products and services that follow best practices around software development lifecycle (SDLC), Agile methodologies, and cloud technologies.
- Solid understanding of statistics (forecasting, time series, hypothesis testing, classification, clustering, regression) and applying it to evaluate ML models.
- Advanced mathematics skills in Linear Algebra, Bayesian Statistics, Group Theory, and Probability.
- Collaborative mindset with leadership and cross-functional teams; strong written and verbal communication; creative and critical thinking skills.
- Bachelor’s degree (BS/BA) in a quantitative field such as mathematics, computer science, physics, economics, engineering, statistics, or an international equivalent, or equivalent job experience.
