Job Description
Columbus City Schools in Columbus, Ohio is seeking an entry‑level Education Systems Data Analyst I (SY26-27) to join its data operations team. This onsite role centers on extracting, validating, and reporting data from student information systems and educational management information systems, ensuring accuracy and compliance with state and federal reporting requirements. The position provides a hands‑on introduction to data analysis within an educational context and supports district reporting needs with reliable data delivery.
Location: Columbus, OH onsite. Compensation is hourly at $36. This entry‑level opportunity requires at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, or a closely related field, plus one year of data analysis experience. Candidates should be prepared to work in person and have their own transportation as needed.
Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, perform entry‑level analysis, interpretation, and validation of data from student information and educational management information systems; perform related duties as required.
- Extract requested data from various databases and integrate it into required file formats.
- Review data accuracy and integrity; identify and analyze error patterns; correct errors by researching sources of information.
- Monitor data entries for timely and accurate completion; identify issues with data gathering, entry, and reporting by staff and system users, such as duplicates or overlapping dates.
- Learn the specialized methods required by state and federal agencies for educational data submissions.
- Assist senior staff in identifying ways to reduce recurring errors and instruct users in new methods.
- Write queries and simple programs to collect and compile data needed for reports for local, state, and federal agencies, staff, and users.
- Develop routine and ad hoc reports, tables, and graphs; help staff interpret results and develop custom reports as requested.
- Review data submitted to external agencies for compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- May participate in developing standards, policies, and procedures for data retrieval and reporting.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with significant coursework (21 semester or 32 quarter hours) in computer science, mathematics, or a closely related field, and one year of experience in data analysis and research.
- Substitution: Additional years of the specified experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Official college transcript or degree must be attached for educational credit before submitting the application.
- 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours equals 1 academic year.
Preferred Qualifications
- Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Excel.
- Previous experience working in the education sector.
- Familiarity with transitioning SAS queries to SQL.
Department Specific Duties & Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience using databases and related technologies; working knowledge of data warehouse concepts and deliverables.
- Write SQL queries and simple programs to collect and compile data for reports as required by local, state, and federal agencies, staff, and users.
- Collaborate with internal and external departments to document requirements and design deliverables (reports, dashboards, alerts, visualizations) and gather feedback on effectiveness.
- Candidates must be willing to work in person and have their own transportation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General knowledge of data analysis processes and data quality assurance.
- Understanding of relational databases and data retrieval methods.
- Familiarity with research and problem‑solving techniques and documentation practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and the ability to write queries and simple programs.
- Ability to retrieve and manipulate data sets to identify patterns, problems, and errors; use logic and analysis to solve problems; organize and summarize information in writing.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues.
