Job Description

Hackensack Meridian Health is hiring an IT Senior Data Scientist for onsite work in Iselin, NJ.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with HMH stakeholders to capture objectives, brainstorm AI/ML approaches, and document solution paths.
  • Lead exploratory data analysis to assess available data for each business objective and evaluate fit for AI/ML solutions.
  • Optimize Large Language Model (LLM) output using prompt engineering; build RAG pipelines.
  • Develop AI/ML models aligned to business goals using available data; evaluate model options and determine optimal approaches and performance characteristics.
  • Create repeatable, interpretable, and scalable models that integrate into analytic data products.
  • Engineer features by applying business context to combine data sources in new ways.
  • Write production-quality pipeline code to load data, run models, and store results.
  • Run AI/ML analyses including fairness, bias, and equity audits, performance assessments, impact assessments, and interpretability reporting.
  • Develop Python code that works cohesively with data engineers, software engineers, and data analysts.
  • Communicate ML/AI methodology and impact to senior management to support strategic decision-making.
  • Proactively communicate with stakeholders about concerns related to changes in work schedules.
  • Lead and manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders and teams; build and maintain relationships with senior management and clients.
  • Mentor and coach junior team members on ML/AI techniques and best practices; set goals and expectations for project teams.
  • Adhere to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
  • Perform other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM or a related/relevant field.
  • 4+ years of experience in a data science role, or 5+ years in a data engineering, analyst, or architecture role.
  • Extensive Python development experience.
  • Extensive SQL experience.
  • Proficiency developing and interpreting complex statistical models and a range of machine learning models.
  • Strong understanding of clinical data, including very proficient querying and use of clinical data.
  • Ability to deploy custom ML/AI models to a cloud platform and write production code for complex models.
  • Experience optimizing LLM output with prompt engineering and model fine-tuning, plus the ability to create RAG pipelines.
  • Ability to create custom model monitoring solutions as needed.
  • Ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer tools including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.

Preferred

  • Master’s / PhD.
  • 5+ years of data analysis experience in healthcare.
  • Proficiency in Epic Clarity clinical data models.
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform (e.g., BigQuery, VertexAI).
  • Experience with Git and GitHub.
  • Experience with Docker.

Education, Certifications, and Licenses (Preferred)

  • Epic Clarity Data Model.
  • Epic Clarity Clinical Data Model.
  • Google Machine Learning Engineer Certification.
