Principal Associate, Data Scientist - Applied AI

The Principal Associate, Data Scientist role in Applied AI supports Capital One’s Commercial Bank mission by embedding Generative AI into core business processes. The position emphasizes enterprise architectures using Multi-Agent Systems and advanced RAG over large volumes of numeric and textual data, built in partnership with cross-functional teams.

Role Focus

You will work on Generative AI solutions designed for customer impact, partnering with data science, machine learning engineering, and product teams. The work includes building and deploying AI models and pipelines that integrate context engineering and evaluation to support production use cases across the Commercial Bank.

Responsibilities

• Partner with cross-functional teams of data scientists, machine learning engineers, and product managers to deliver Generative AI solutions customers value.
• Use a broad technology stack, including Python, LangChain, AWS, Workflows, and Vector Databases, to build Multi-Agent systems and advanced RAG pipelines over large volumes of numeric and textual data.
• Develop Generative AI models and pipelines across the full lifecycle, including context engineering, fine-tuning, evaluation, validation, and deployment.
• Apply interpersonal skills to translate technical complexity into tangible business goals.

Required Qualifications

• Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, one of the following, with the expectation that the required degree will be obtained on or before the scheduled start date:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field) plus 5 years of experience performing data analytics.
  • A Master’s Degree in a quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematic (as listed)) plus 3 years of experience in data analytics.
  • A Master’s Degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics).
  • A PhD in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics).
• At least 2 years of experience in AI, Information Retrieval, Deep Learning, or NLP.
• At least 3 years of experience in Python, Scala, or R.
• At least 3 years of experience with machine learning.
• At least 3 years of experience with SQL.

Team Description

The Commercial Bank Applied AI team is focused on embedding Generative AI directly into core business processes. The team builds enterprise-grade architectures using advanced techniques including Multi-Agent Systems, Advanced RAG, Context Engineering, and Tool-Calling Frameworks. The role emphasizes hands-on machine learning and AI experience gained through professional work or rigorous academic research.

• Statistically-minded: builds, validates, and backtests models, and can interpret performance diagnostics such as confusion matrices and ROC curves; experience includes clustering, classification, sentiment analysis, time series, and deep learning.

Location and Salary

Location: New York, NY (onsite).
Salary: USD 176,500 - 201,400 per year.
