Job Description

The on-site AI Engineer role at Suffolk Construction Company, Inc. is based in Charlotte Amalie, VI, and focuses on turning AI ideas into practical deployments by building AI agents for construction sites and redesigning workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Lead discovery efforts to identify AI opportunities, map value streams, assess process and data maturity, and document high impact, low effort AI use cases.
  • Assess current jobsite workflows and underlying data to surface gaps hindering AI adoption; develop phased improvement plans with Operations Excellence to establish a solid process baseline before deploying agents.
  • Evaluate market solutions, including off-the-shelf and platform tools; run pilots, measure outcomes, and scale successful results.
  • Translate user stories into MVP AI agents in AWS Bedrock, SageMaker, ChatGPT Enterprise, and other frameworks within days; connect front-end delivery to Teams/SharePoint and back-end data sources such as Databricks Lakehouse and AWS services.
  • Develop enterprise grade LLMOps pipelines backed by Opensearch and other data stores; automate infrastructure with GitHub Actions; monitor latency, cost, adoption, and drift.
  • Partner with Data Engineering to design and maintain ETL pipelines, API integrations, and event-driven connectors feeding RAG and agents.
  • Coordinate cross-cloud orchestration by leveraging AWS Bedrock, OpenAI, and Azure OpenAI behind secure connectors; package agents for seamless rollout.
  • Drive change enablement by training crews, gathering feedback, iterating, and tracking adoption and ROI metrics; apply behavior change principles to embed agents into daily routines and SOPs, and monitor related KPIs.
  • Brief project leadership and clients on agent impact in clear business terms; contribute use cases and playbooks for Suffolk’s Construction Site of the Future.
  • Draft clear user stories, data specs, and acceptance criteria for complex solutions requiring escalation to the central AI Solution Engineers or Data Engineering / Data Science teams; collaborate to turn prototypes into enterprise-ready scaled applications.
  • Ensure every on-site AI tool meets Suffolk’s information security, data governance, and client confidentiality standards.

Requirements

  • 4 to 6 plus years in AI engineering, full-stack data applications, or data science, including at least two years building production LLM, RAG, or Agentic solutions.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Hands-on experience in construction or other heavy process industries (manufacturing, oil and gas, chemicals) is a significant plus.
  • Proven process excellence background, with Lean or Six Sigma Green Belt being highly favorable, including experience diagnosing process and data gaps and supporting change management plans with Operations Excellence.
  • Strong facilitation and communication skills.
  • Hands-on expertise with Claude Code, Devin AI, MS Copilot, and other coding assistants.
  • Programming and data stack: Python, SQL, FastAPI, Databricks Lakehouse, and vector stores.
  • DevOps and IaC: GitHub Actions with Terraform or CloudFormation automation, or comparable CI/CD tooling; solid Git/GitHub workflow discipline.
  • Foundational understanding of ETL/ELT design, Airflow or Databricks Workflows, and REST/GraphQL API development; proven collaboration with Data Engineering on source-to-lake and lake-to-agent pipelines.
