Sr. AI Engineer
Job Description
Fieldpiece Instruments is building its first dedicated AI engineering capability and is looking for a Senior AI Engineer to partner with teams across the organization. In this role, you will translate business needs into production-ready AI and automation solutions, then help deploy and continuously improve them over time.
This position is based in Orange, CA with a hybrid schedule. The office location will transition to Tustin, CA in 2028.
What you’ll do
- Work with teams across Fieldpiece to understand workflows, pain points, and business needs, then identify opportunities where AI, automation, or improved technology can make a measurable difference.
- Move from business requirements to working solutions by designing, developing, implementing, and supporting production-ready applications and automations.
- Build practical AI-enabled capabilities including AI agents, copilots, workflow automations, and decision-support tools.
- Develop AI applications using large language models, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), enterprise knowledge systems, APIs, and agentic workflows.
- Integrate AI solutions with enterprise platforms such as ERP, CRM, PLM, customer support, analytics, knowledge management, productivity tools, and related systems.
- Reengineer processes to improve speed, accuracy, quality, service, cost, revenue enablement, and employee productivity.
- Define testing and evaluation approaches to help ensure solutions are accurate, reliable, secure, scalable, and effective.
- Partner with Information Systems, business leaders, data owners, and security stakeholders to implement appropriate governance and controls.
- Support user adoption of new AI tools and iterate based on feedback and results.
- Evaluate emerging AI technologies and make recommendations based on business value, implementation requirements, cost, risk, and scalability.
Skills and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in CS, AI, or a related field.
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including ownership of production applications.
- 2+ years building solutions with modern AI technologies, including large language models.
- Ability to take ambiguous business problems and convert them into practical technical solutions.
- Hands-on experience with prompt design, retrieval architectures, AI application testing, and model/system evaluation, including experience building AI agents, multi-agent systems, tool-using agents, RAG solutions, or complex agentic workflows.
- Experience integrating APIs, cloud services, enterprise applications, and data sources.
- Strong proficiency in Python or another modern language used for AI application development.
- Experience with data engineering, analytics/BI, MLOps/LLMOps, observability, or cloud deployment.
- Experience with source control, testing, deployment, monitoring, and modern software delivery practices.
- Excellent communication skills to work with technical and nontechnical stakeholders and explain complex decisions in business terms.
- A practical, curious mindset, including interest in learning how the business works and using technology to improve it.

Hybrid schedule and location
- Based in the Orange, CA office with a hybrid schedule.
- Employees typically work onsite three days per week.
- Additional onsite days may be required for onboarding, training, team meetings, project collaboration, or other business needs.
