Job Description

Unum Group is hiring a Sr. Data Engineer for CX Analytics (hybrid) to build and operate end-to-end data pipelines and analytics-ready data products.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, and maintain complex data pipelines using a range of languages and tools to meet business needs
  • Integrate large volumes of data from multiple sources including DB2, SQL Server, Web API, and Teradata
  • Apply validation, aggregation, and reconciliation to form a rich data framework
  • Partner with data scientists and business partners to understand analytics problems and create data structures tailored to those use cases
  • Define scalability, extensibility, performance, and maintainability requirements and deliver pipelines that meet them
  • Promote and lead solution development using an engineering process appropriate for different scenarios
  • Drive the evolution of enterprise data architecture, including adoption of current and emerging data frameworks and tools (including hosting data in Cloud)
  • Prepare outputs for interpretation and visualization, and communicate findings and potential value to influence manager, leadership, and business partner decisions
  • Lead integration of solutions into existing business processes using automation techniques
  • Apply current and emerging software engineering practices to data engineering work
  • Provide support, training, and/or mentorship to lower-level Data Engineer peers
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field is required; Master’s or PhD in a quantitative field is preferred
  • 6 years of professional experience (or equivalent relevant experience) preferred
  • Expertise in at least one relevant object-oriented programming language: Java/Scala or Python
  • Experience with DevOps best practices, including CI/CD, process automation, and optimization
  • Working knowledge of data architecture principles and infrastructure requirements across on-prem and Cloud platforms
  • Ability to understand and present data in context, including how data builds toward a business solution
  • Preferred: expertise writing complex SQL queries joining multiple tables/databases
  • Ability to independently explore databases/tables and other legacy data to identify best sources
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex SQL queries with little guidance
  • Ability to create logical data models combining data from multiple internal and external sources
  • Demonstrated communication skills, strong experience in financial services, leadership experience with senior/executive stakeholders, and attention to detail while prioritizing work across multiple projects
  • Provides guidance and direction on projects to less experienced staff
  • Strong ability to understand, explain, and communicate an appropriate solution
  • Actively coaches and mentors peers and team members, especially within areas of expertise
  • Responds quickly and positively to change; promotes change management
  • Provides technical leadership for data science initiatives, ensuring outputs align to agreed quality attributes
  • Entrepreneurial self-starter mindset; thorough, results-oriented problem-solving and lifelong learning

Role Summary

  • Design, build, and maintain data solutions enabling BI/reporting and advanced analytics with data that is accessible, reliable, and structured for meaningful use
  • Own specific data domains and pipelines end-to-end
  • Develop and optimize data models
  • Integrate new data sources across the ecosystem, including structured and unstructured data
  • Build and support AI-enabled pipelines and LLM-based workflows that extract signal from sources such as raw text
  • Use automation to scale how the team delivers analytics
  • Mentor engineers and partner with BI Analysts and Data Scientists to support their work, focusing on quality, scalability, and usability in environments, pipelines, and datasets
  • This is a campus-based role; current remote and field-based Unum employees may apply and will be considered per company policy

Location: Portland, ME (hybrid) | Salary: USD 89,400 - 183,500 per year
