At Suffolk Construction, the Site AI Engineer operates on-site to turn AI ideas into practical solutions across U.S. project sites. You’ll collaborate with AI Champions on each project to redesign workflows and deploy agentic AI that enhances field operations, reporting, and planning tasks.
Role
The on-site catalyst role involves transforming AI concepts into working capabilities on active construction sites, partnering with project leaders to advance the Construction Site of the Future through actionable AI-enabled workflows and agents.
Responsibilities
- Lead discovery to identify opportunities, map value streams, assess process and data maturity, and document low-effort, high-impact AI use cases.
- Evaluate current jobsite workflows and data; surface gaps that hinder AI adoption and develop phased improvement plans with Operations Excellence to establish a solid baseline before deploying agents.
- Assess market solutions, run pilots, measure impact, and scale successful implementations.
- Rapidly build MVP AI agents from user stories in AWS Bedrock/SageMaker, ChatGPT Enterprise, and other frameworks, wiring front-end interfaces to Teams/SharePoint and back-end data sources like Databricks Lakehouse or AWS services.
- Deliver enterprise-grade engineering and LLMOps, including Agentic RAG pipelines backed by OpenSearch; automate infrastructure with GitHub Actions; monitor latency, cost, adoption, and drift.
- Coordinate with Data Engineering to design and maintain ETL pipelines, API integrations, and event-driven connectors for RAG and agents.
- Orchestrate cross-cloud solutions by blending AWS Bedrock, OpenAI, and Azure OpenAI behind secure connectors, packaging agents for scalable rollout.
- Drive change enablement through training, feedback loops, iteration, and ROI tracking; apply behavior-change KPIs to embed agents into daily routines and SOPs.
- Provide clear business-focused updates to project leadership and clients; contribute use cases and playbooks for Suffolk’s Construction Site of the Future.
- Draft user stories, data specs, and acceptance criteria for complex solutions requiring central AI Studio or Data Engineering / Data Science support, then partner to scale prototypes into enterprise-grade applications.
- Ensure on-site AI tools comply with Suffolk’s information security, data governance, and client confidentiality standards.
Requirements
- 4–6+ years in AI engineering, full-stack data applications, or data science, including 2+ years building production LLM/RAG/Agentic solutions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field; Master’s preferred.
- Hands-on experience in construction or heavy process industries (manufacturing, oil & gas, chemicals) is a strong plus.
- Proven process excellence background with experience diagnosing process and data gaps and supporting change management with Operations Excellence; Lean/Six Sigma Green Belt is a bonus.
- Strong facilitation and communication skills.
- Hands-on experience with Claude Code, Devin AI, MS Copilot, and other coding assistants.
- Programming and data stack: Python, SQL, FastAPI, Databricks Lakehouse, vector stores.
- DevOps & IaC: GitHub Actions, Terraform or CloudFormation automation, and solid Git/GitHub discipline.
- ETL/ELT design knowledge, Airflow or Databricks Workflows, REST/GraphQL API development; proven collaboration with Data Engineering on source-to-lake and lake-to-agent pipelines.
- Willing and able to travel and work on active job sites.
