Job Description

PowerPlan, Inc is looking for an AI Data Engineer to join the Applied AI team in Atlanta, GA (hybrid). In this role, you will build and govern the data foundation that powers AI solutions used across finance, sales, professional services, and product. You will help standardize how the business defines and uses data, reduce reliance on hand-built recurring reports, and enable business and technology teams to plan AI work with confidence.

What you’ll deliver

  • In your first 30 days, learn how the company runs on data and produce an owner-checked first catalog of critical data by the end of your first quarter.
  • Keep the catalog current enough by month 12 so business and technology leaders can plan AI initiatives based on shared definitions.
  • Help the team establish standards for data, connections, and code review within your first 30 days, including guidance for how AI tools access business systems: read-only by default, no more complex than the job requires, and reviewed by IT and security.
  • Partner with an AI engineer on an initial build in your first quarter, then lead the data work for a larger pilot build by six months.
  • By month 12, deliver the data behind at least two larger AI solutions that are in weekly use and run by the business.
  • Agree on the first shared datasets in your first quarter, publish the first shared dataset by six months, and have at least two shared, governed datasets in use by more than one team or AI solution by month 12.
  • Within 12 months, retire hand-built recurring reports by defining the underlying numbers once, enabling AI tools to draft commentary, answer questions, and flag items requiring human attention.

What you bring

  • 2 to 4 years of professional experience as a data engineer, analytics engineer, or similar role where writing code to clean and model data was central, or a master’s degree in a related field with at least one year of experience.
  • Experience turning messy real-world data from business systems, spreadsheets, or documents into something people or an AI tool can use, including the ability to explain what broke and how you fixed it.
  • Ability to trace numbers back through the systems and processes that produce them, and to incorporate meaning from the people who own the data, including how business explanations changed what you built.
  • Comfort working with agentic coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or OpenCode, including planning work, directing the tool, and checking outputs. The team builds with Claude Code, and tools are provided.
  • Strong Python and SQL skills, including reading and modifying code written by others.
  • Experience pulling data end to end from an API, including authentication, secrets, paging, and error handling.
  • Habitual use of Git, treating data access and documentation as part of the build, and writing notes a business owner can follow.
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, information systems, or a closely related quantitative field (a business analytics or other quantitative business degree also qualifies if it included substantial programming coursework).
  • Ability to work from Atlanta in the office at least three days a week and authorization to work in the United States (not eligible for visa sponsorship now or in the future).

Even better if…

  • You have built an MCP server, an agent skill, or a connector someone else used.
  • You have experience with a modern data platform, retrieval over documents (RAG), or data quality checks.
  • You’ve worked with CRM, finance, or project data, ideally within or alongside finance, professional services, sales operations, or support.
  • You’ve applied continuous improvement methods such as Lean, Six Sigma, or value stream mapping.
  • You hold a master’s degree in a related field such as computer science, information systems, data science, or business analytics.
