Job Description

The AI Strategy & Transformation team at Charles Schwab (AI.x) is building and scaling GenAI capabilities to improve client experiences and deliver measurable business value. This AI Engineer role is based in San Francisco and focuses on designing, developing, and bringing GenAI applications into production.

Role Summary

As an AI Engineer on AI.x, you will help create GenAI applications by building end-to-end solutions with an emphasis on production delivery and engineering discipline. The team works across product, engineering, strategy, and risk to align new AI capabilities with Schwab’s enterprise direction.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deliver GenAI applications that enhance client experience and create business value.
  • Partner with architects, engineers, and business leaders to ensure solutions align with Schwab’s enterprise strategy.
  • Learn from senior engineers, join technical discussions, and help strengthen engineering practices while supporting a continuous learning culture.
  • Address complex technical challenges, support best engineering standards, and drive improvements from concept through production.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of software development experience, including 3+ years as a hands-on engineer in startups and/or large organizations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • 3+ years building complex products from scratch and supporting them in production environments.
  • 1+ years developing applications that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) models to deliver business impact.
  • 2+ years working with applications or data pipelines interfacing with large datasets.
  • 2+ years working with containers and cloud-native applications, including exposure to deploying in the public cloud using infrastructure as code.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong computer science fundamentals with experience across different parts of the tech stack.
  • Experience with proprietary or open-source LLMs, such as Gemini, Claude, and OpenAI, and contributing to LLM-powered applications.
  • Quality-focused development practices, including writing and maintaining tests.
  • Experience evaluating and monitoring LLM-generated outputs for quality and consistency.
  • Clear communication skills in verbal and written forms.
  • Interest in mentoring peers and learning from senior engineers through feedback and code reviews.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
  • Ability to solve complex problems with ambiguous or incomplete data within distributed systems.
  • Knowledge of business domains related to products contributed to.
  • Curiosity about new technologies and processes, with interest in sharing knowledge with the team.
  • Experience with Python and front-end development is preferred but not required.
  • Master’s or advanced degrees in Computer Science or related fields are a plus.

  • AI.x accelerates AI delivery across the company and builds a core AI platform that powers AI at scale.
  • The team also explores next-generation GenAI efforts designed to redefine how Schwab serves clients.

Location and Compensation

  • Location: San Francisco, CA (onsite)
  • Salary: USD 200,000 - 250,000 per year
