Job Description
Exelon is hiring an Associate Data Scientist to apply scientific methods to diverse datasets, build and operationalize machine learning models, and support analytics-driven decisions. This hybrid role is based in Lombard, IL, with defined in-office days and some potential extended hours during storms or energy delivery emergencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply the scientific method to extract knowledge and insights from data, including time-series data (smart-meters, smart-grid, and other IoT), structured relational datasets, and unstructured text and multi-media datasets.
- Train state-of-the-art algorithmic models, including tree-based approaches and neural networks, and implement those models into production using established MLOps practices.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, information architects, data engineers, project or program managers, and other teams to convert data into analytics-driven products that inform decision-making.
- Validate findings with the business by sharing analysis outputs in formats that business stakeholders can understand.
- Develop and maintain expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, feature engineering, and high-performance computing.
- Share knowledge with team members, business stakeholders, and IT partners.
- Develop key predictive models that support premier customer experience, operating performance improvements, and increased safety best practices.
- Use advanced analytics techniques to support process improvement efforts within modern analytics frameworks, including work with Python, R, Scala (or equivalents) and big data technologies such as Spark and Hadoop file system.
- Access and analyze data from multiple company systems of record, supporting strategic business, marketing, and program implementation plans.
- Provide expert data and analytics support to multiple business units.
- Access and enrich data warehouses across company departments, and build, modify, monitor, and maintain high-performance computing systems.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree from a leading program in a Quantitative discipline, such as Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Finance, Operations Research, Physics, Statistics, or a related field.
- Intern experience in a data science role or prior research or professional experience applying advanced analytic techniques to large, complex datasets.
- Strong knowledge in at least two areas: machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistical modeling, data mining, information retrieval, or data visualization.
- Demonstratable experience using an analytics or statistics or visualization platform of choice, with preference for experience in the MS Azure suite as well as Python and SQL, including big data technologies such as Spark and Dask.
- Ability to translate analysis into coherent conclusions and actionable recommendations, with strong oral and written communication skills.

Job Scope
- Support business unit strategic planning while providing a strategic view on machine learning technologies.
- Advise key stakeholders on machine learning findings and recommend actions that redirect resources to improve operational performance or address emerging business issues.
- Provide machine learning analyses to key stakeholders to help position the company for the future.
- Educate key stakeholders on the organization’s advanced analytics capabilities through internal presentations, training workshops, and publications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree from a leading program in a Quantitative discipline.
- Prior exposure to data structures related to smart-meters, billing, or outage management systems, or experience in the utilities or broader energy sector.
- Solid understanding of relevant machine learning and analytics theories, including machine learning, statistics, probability theory, data structures and algorithms, and optimization.
- Expert-level coding skills (Python, R, Scala, etc.) and experience developing in a Unix environment.
- Ability to translate executive and analytics leaders’ vision and guidance into methods and analytics, with strong time management and presentation skills. Experience presenting to diverse audiences, including conferences and business symposia.
- Experience with Python, SQL, PowerBi, and PowerApp.
Location and Schedule
- Location: Lombard, IL (hybrid).
- Employees are required to be in office at least three days per week: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
- This position must sit out of the Lombard, IL office.
- This position is not eligible for relocation assistance.
- Potential for extended hours during storms or energy delivery emergencies.
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual salary: $59,200 - $88,800 per year.
- Annual bonus (eligible positions): 7%

Education Requirement
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a Quantitative discipline is required.
