Data Engineer
Job Description
The role focuses on end-to-end analytics delivery, from source ingestion and governed transformations through to Power BI semantic modeling and production dashboards. This position is based in the Washington, DC area with a hybrid arrangement and includes collaboration with business stakeholders on reporting requirements and shared metric definitions.
Role Overview
As a Data Engineer, you will build analytics pipelines and models, deliver the Power BI reporting semantic layer, and own the full workflow from data ingestion to production reporting. You will work with business stakeholders to align on reporting requirements and metric definitions, with a focus on performance, governance, and data quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Build ingestion and transformation pipelines from operational systems, APIs, and files, including incremental loading, historization, and schema change handling.
- Design analytics data models using dimensional modeling, conformed dimensions, slowly changing dimensions, and aggregate strategies to improve query performance.
- Implement data quality and reconciliation controls, including alerting designed to surface issues before reporting is impacted.
- Orchestrate and monitor scheduled workloads with dependency management, retry behavior, and failure handling.
- Develop Power BI semantic models, including DAX measures, relationships, row-level security, incremental refresh, and performance tuning.
- Create reports and dashboards that address stakeholder questions with attention to clarity, accessibility, and load time.
- Administer the Power BI environment, including workspaces, deployment pipelines, gateways, capacity, and usage monitoring.
- Define and document metric definitions so the same number represents the same meaning across reports and datasets.
- Elicit reporting and analytics requirements from business stakeholders and translate them into models, measures, and visuals.
- Train and support report consumers and self-service users, and establish guardrails to keep self-service reliable.
- Document datasets, models, metric definitions, and data lineage.
- Support solution design, estimation, and technical approach during presales and project planning.
- Improve shared standards, reusable components, and report templates based on needs identified through client engagement.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Eight (8) years of professional data engineering or analytics engineering experience.
- Demonstrated experience delivering an end-to-end analytics solution from source ingestion through production reporting.
- Significant Power BI experience, including semantic model design, DAX, and performance tuning (not report authoring alone).
- Demonstrated experience partnering with business stakeholders to define reporting requirements and metric definitions.
- Experience supporting regulatory, compliance, or operational reporting where metrics are closely reviewed is preferred.
- Experience with public sector, SLED (state, local, and education), or higher-education clients is preferred, not required.
- Must physically reside in the United States and be authorized to work in the United States.

Reporting Line
This role reports to the Engineering Lead.
Location and Work Model
- Location: DMV area, hybrid
- Work arrangement: primarily remote with in-person client engagement as needed

- Occasional travel within the DC-metro area for customer engagements and team on-sites
