Data Engineer – Big Data Platform

The Data Engineer role on PNC Financial Services Group's Big Data Platform focuses on building and refining cloud-native data solutions, ensuring platform health and performance, and enabling organization‑wide analytics.

Responsibilities

• Monitor, maintain, and enhance the health and performance of the data platform
• Ensure stability, reliability, and scalability across data systems
• Apply best practices for platform operations and data engineering standards, ensuring understanding and adherence among technical and business stakeholders
• Regularly review the data platform architecture to identify automation, optimization, right-sizing, and cost-reduction opportunities
• Lead user migration to a unified data platform
• Modernize legacy Hadoop based systems to cloud‑native architectures
• Design and implement scalable data platforms using open‑source technologies such as Apache Iceberg, Airflow, and Trino
• Implement data lakehouse architecture to ensure structured and transactional data availability
• Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate analytical needs into technical solutions
• Apply contemporary methodologies and tools to advance business initiatives and capabilities
• Serve as an internal consultant on big data tools and capabilities
• Improve query performance and data structures to support analytical workloads
• Guide stakeholders in leveraging data for actionable business insights
• Define and implement internal process improvements through analytics that inform key performance metrics

Requirements

• Proficiency in Python, Spark, and Scala
• Strong background in SQL development and enterprise databases such as Oracle and Teradata
• Experience with modern cloud-native and open‑source tools: Apache Iceberg, Apache Airflow, and Trino
• Extensive experience in modern data engineering and big data ecosystems
• Hands-on experience building scalable data platforms and analytics using data lakehouse architectures
• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Azure and AWS and their data services
• Ability to contribute to solution design beyond data movement
• Strong communication skills to bridge technical and non‑technical audiences
• Proven ability to align business needs with engineering work
• Collaborative mindset with experience across cross‑functional teams
• Strong problem‑solving and analytical thinking

Job Description

• Develop, support, and implement data services for multiple applications to meet business objectives and user requirements
• Collaborate with users, developers, operations, and business partners to define data service requirements and data preparation processes
• Design and build data service infrastructure across multiple data platforms aligned with key business processes
• Develop and implement data solutions for multiple applications to ensure scalability, availability, and maintainability
• Execute data migration and transformation activities to ensure data solution accuracy and security

Pay Transparency

Base Salary: $86,250.00 – $172,500.00 per year. Salaries may vary based on geographic location, market data, and individual skills, experience, and education. This role is incentive eligible with payments based on company, business, and/or individual performance.
