Job Description

Join The Travelers Companies, Inc. as a Data Engineer I on site in Hartford, CT. You will help modernize CMP and Specialty pricing data platforms by building scalable data pipelines, collaborate with Actuarial and Data Science teams, and apply MLOps practices to model development and deployment on AWS. The role offers a base salary range of $109,300 to $180,200 per year, along with a benefits package that supports health coverage, retirement savings, paid time off, wellness initiatives, and volunteer opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain data pipelines for CMP and Specialty pricing scenarios, ensuring reliability and scalability in production.
  • Perform data preparation tasks such as exploration, cleansing, and transformation, aligned with enterprise architecture, platforms, and downstream consumption needs.
  • Convert actuarial and data science requirements into scalable, production-ready data solutions under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Support data quality checks, profiling, and monitoring throughout the model development lifecycle.
  • Assist in implementing CMP and Specialty pricing models in collaboration with Data Science and Actuarial teams.
  • Learn and apply MLOps practices across the model development and deployment lifecycle.
  • Develop deep knowledge of CMP and Specialty data to become a subject matter resource for benchmarks, modernization efforts, and future enhancements.
  • Contribute to planning and execution of CMP and Specialty data engineering projects.
  • Present analyses and offer technical recommendations to inform data implementation decisions.
  • Participate in code reviews and design discussions to help shape team standards and best practices.
  • Support platform modernization by migrating legacy processes to cloud-native architectures on AWS.
  • Apply agile methodologies to plan, prioritize, and deliver work across multiple initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related STEM field, or equivalent in education or work experience.
  • Six years of related experience.
  • Proficiency with cloud platforms, programming languages, and standard software engineering practices.
  • Ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace to meet commitments, decompose work into small batch releases, and contribute to tradeoff discussions.
  • Proven domain expertise with the ability to understand technical concepts and in-depth knowledge of current systems.
  • Strong problem solving and debugging skills, with the ability to identify issue sources in unfamiliar code or systems and resolve recurring problems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with team members and business partners.
  • Intermediate leadership skills with a track record of self-motivation and pursuing personal growth opportunities.
  • Two additional years of software or data engineering experience.
