Job Description

Join the U.S. Veterans Health Administration as a Data Scientist within the Minneapolis VA Research and Development Service. You will support data, informatics, and technical needs for investigators and staff, helping to advance research data management, EHR integration, database development, and informatics initiatives. This role offers a remote-friendly setup in Minneapolis, MN and a competitive salary in the range of USD 116,038 to 150,852 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and execute programs or studies with minimal supervision under administrative direction.
  • Develop study designs, methodological approaches, and communicate findings through advanced written, verbal, and visual formats.
  • Contribute to the design of sophisticated data systems, software, and complex programming specifications.
  • Analyze electronic health record data to build predictive analytics and process medical imaging when applicable.
  • Apply high impact AI technologies, including deep learning, trustworthy AI, privacy-preserving AI, explainable AI, and multi-scale AI analysis.
  • Plan and implement research data strategies for monitoring, analysis, presentation, and interpretation to support study objectives.
  • Collaborate with biostatisticians and investigators to extract, mine, clean, analyze, and interpret research data; investigate and resolve data inconsistencies with the research team.
  • Work with large longitudinal medical databases and statistics software platforms (e.g., SAS); use SQL queries and visual programming tools; perform statistical analyses with specialized models or procedures.
  • Provide interpersonal communications, outreach, acquisitions and procurement, information technology, and financial management to support primary tasks.
  • Lead or consult with cross-functional teams of federal staff and contractors to develop data-driven solutions for VA programs and business challenges.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required to apply; non-citizens may be appointed where qualified citizens cannot be recruited per VA policy.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to a background and security investigation.
  • Must complete online onboarding; Real ID compliant identification needed after May 7, 2025. Pre-employment documents (I-9) are required.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all VA Health Care Personnel.

  • Basic Citizenship requirement: United States Citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed only when no qualified citizens are available per VA policy.
  • Individual Occupational Requirement: Degree in Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science, or related field at least bachelor’s level, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (30 semester hours) plus additional education or appropriate experience.
  • Specialized Experience: One year equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12 Data Scientist) for GS-13 consideration.
  • Selective Placement Factor: Proficiency with SQL, Python, R, or SAS to manage data from large databases.
  • Preferred Experience: Two years or more in informatics, data analysis, or health information systems; direct experience with research data management, EHR systems, or health IT platforms is strongly preferred.
  • Physical Requirements: This is primarily a sedentary role.
