Job Description

Caterpillar is looking for a Data Scientist to join the Advanced Diagnostics team within Cat Digital’s Analytics & Applied AI organization. This Chicago, IL (onsite) role applies advanced analytics, including machine learning and causal inference, to help enable improved service experiences through collaboration with Cat Digital and Global Service business teams.

What you’ll do

  • Work as a technical individual contributor on a small, multi-person analytics team, with methods and results reviewed by the technical project leader.
  • Balance independent execution with teamwork, including autonomy to lead specific project tasks and collaborate on larger challenges.
  • Apply expertise in data cleaning, quantitative analytic methods, and modeling to address complex problems.
  • Use machine learning, statistical modeling, and causal inference to generate insights, optimize outcomes, and deliver measurable business value.
  • Become familiar with Caterpillar’s processes, products, governance, and organization.
  • Meet delivery expectations by refining solutions for complex situations, making timely decisions, and communicating effectively with the technical project leader, manager, and business partners.

What you’ll have

  • Analytical thinking to determine root causes of organizational problems and develop alternative solutions.
  • Exploratory data analysis skills to identify patterns, trends, and insights in complex datasets, including data mining and cleaning; writing, debugging, and implementing queries across multiple tables or databases.
  • Machine learning knowledge, including the ability to develop, implement, and deliver systems, products, and services; experience with machine learning initiatives such as classification, regression, or optimization.
  • Programming proficiency with SQL, Python, and statistical or mathematical software packages.
  • Collaboration and communication experience working with cross-functional teams to provide data-driven insights.

Required experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of proven technical data science experience, or Master’s degree with 3+ years of proven technical data science experience (preferably with quantitative coursework).
  • Experience using Python for data analysis and modeling, including Jupyter Notebooks and common libraries/packages.
  • Experience with Git (version control).
  • Experience with SQL and NoSQL database technologies.
  • Practical experience processing large quantities of detailed information with high accuracy.
  • Practical cloud computing experience for building solutions in cloud environments (for example, AWS and Snowflake).
  • Experience productionizing predictive and/or prescriptive analytics solutions and machine learning models.
  • Experience applying advanced data analysis and statistical techniques, including classification, regression, clustering, collaborative filtering, and hypothesis testing.
  • Experience developing and implementing natural language processing (NLP) algorithms and models for insights from textual data.
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills with continual learning, including initiative to research and apply new methods.
  • Strong communication skills to explain conclusions to technical leaders, managers, and business partners.
  • Experience operating in an Agile environment with ownership and the ability to complete tasks.
  • Experience with API development to integrate with digital applications and efficiently extract and process data.
  • Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail and focus on delivering customer-through-business-partner requirements.
  • Interest in emerging AI and GenAI techniques and willingness to continuously learn and adapt.

Compensation & posting details

Salary range: USD 97,530 - 158,480 per year.
