Job Description

General Motors is seeking a Data Scientist for Employee Research in Warren, MI (remote). In this role, you will apply organizational research, behavioral science, and advanced analytics to deepen understanding of employee experience, engagement and sentiment, manager and team effectiveness, organizational health, workforce dynamics, and the impact of people interventions. You will lead end-to-end research projects while building reusable methods and partnering with People Analytics stakeholders and solutions teams.

What you’ll do

  • Frame organizational questions by developing hypotheses, defining outcomes, and clarifying which decisions research should inform.
  • Design and run quantitative and mixed-method studies using survey, cohort, longitudinal, multilevel, experimental, quasi-experimental, and causal approaches.
  • Integrate employee and people-data sources where appropriate, including HRIS, talent, performance, movement, operational data, open-text responses, interviews, and focus groups.
  • Analyze drivers and consequences of employee experience across team, manager, workforce, and organizational factors.
  • Apply driver, segmentation, trend, and linkage analyses to explain engagement and sentiment, identify actionable factors, and evaluate relative business impact.
  • Evaluate people programs, manager initiatives, and organizational changes by setting outcomes, baselines, comparison groups, and follow-up measures.
  • Support workforce research and planning through scenario analysis, workforce-risk indicators, and assessment of workforce supply, demand, capability, and movement.
  • Develop foundational use cases and governance for Organizational Network Analysis and related research on collaboration, influence, connectivity, and change.
  • Assess emerging methods, including text analytics and artificial intelligence, when they align to a defined research or business need.
  • Translate research results into recommendations, decision options, and measures of progress for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Deliver research briefs, executive presentations, evaluation readouts, measurement frameworks, and analytical documentation.
  • Partner with stakeholders to shape questions, challenge assumptions, and connect evidence to action.
  • Maintain reproducible, well-documented work using version-controlled code, transparent assumptions, quality checks, and clear limitations.

What you’ll bring

  • Experience in data science, quantitative research, people analytics, organizational research, behavioral science, or a related field.
  • Python or R experience and strong SQL skills for data wrangling, statistical analysis, and reproducible research.
  • Expert knowledge of regression, hypothesis testing, survey methodology, psychometrics, experimental and quasi-experimental design, causal inference, and longitudinal or multilevel analysis.
  • Experience leading end-to-end research or analytical projects, from problem formulation through communicating findings.
  • Ability to explain complex analyses to non-technical audiences and use sound judgment with sensitive employee data.

Compensation and benefits

  • Salary range: $106,000 to $163,000 per year.

Remote location, travel, and relocation

This role is based remotely. If the selected candidate lives within a specific mile radius of a GM hub, they are expected to report to the location three times a week (or other frequency dictated by their manager).

Relocation is not included. Any relocation costs would be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Preferred qualifications

  • Advanced degree or equivalent applied research experience in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, Organizational Behavior, Behavioral Science, Sociology, Economics, Statistics, Data Science, Psychometrics, or a related field.
  • Experience with employee surveys, engagement and sentiment, performance, movement, retention, talent, workforce planning, or lifecycle data.
  • Experience with intervention evaluation, longitudinal or panel analysis, multilevel modeling, mixed methods, text or NLP analysis, or Organizational Network Analysis.
  • Experience with workforce planning, scenario modeling, organizational effectiveness, manager and team research, organizational development, or change evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to shape research questions, influence HR or business leaders, and translate evidence into responsible action.
