Job Description

The Sr. Data Scientist will lead advanced analytics initiatives from discovery through delivery, developing predictive models and proof of concepts that generate measurable value for the PR Operations Organization. This is a cross-functional role requiring independent execution, stakeholder communication, and adherence to regulatory and security expectations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, use, and further develop data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence capabilities across Amgen’s commercial organization.
  • Drive projects and collaborate on cross-functional teams to systematically derive insights that support substantial business value for Amgen.
  • Take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Identify business needs, conduct SWOT analysis, propose analytical approaches, obtain approvals, and execute work end to end.
  • Build high-performance algorithms, prototypes, predictive models, and proof of concepts using Python.
  • Work with SQL and other database query languages.
  • Lead, collaborate, and communicate across functions to develop appropriate methodology for specific business questions.
  • Present analysis ideas, progress, and results to business partners in a clear and impactful manner.
  • Create and communicate insights through PowerPoint, with strong working knowledge of MS Office, specifically Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, security, and privacy requirements related to data assets.

Requirements

  • Education and experience aligned to one of the following:
    • Doctorate or Masters with 2 years of related experience.
    • Bachelors with 4 years of related experience.
    • Associates with 8 years of related experience.
    • High school/GED with 10 years of related experience.
  • Related field experience includes data science, business, statistics, data mining, applied mathematics, business analytics, engineering, computer science, or equivalent.
  • Experience in programming, coding, system design and architecture, algorithms, and data structures.
  • Experience using statistical software and coding languages such as R, MATLAB, SAS, and Python, along with database languages such as SQL.
  • Ability to articulate business questions and use programming techniques to establish business solutions.
  • Capability to develop solutions for routine technical problems.
  • Demonstrated skill selecting appropriate tools for a given problem.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills across different working styles.
  • Fully bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Strong logical reasoning, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills with detailed technical proficiency.
  • Leadership, initiative, and self-motivation, with strong time and project management to deliver on time and within budget.
  • Strong compliance mindset suitable for a highly regulated GMP industry.
  • Computer literacy in Windows (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Minitab).
  • Degree in Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Physics, Statistics, or Operations Research.
  • Experience leading projects end to end, including execution.
  • Experience with databases including relational, SQL, and Graph.
  • Programming experience with Python, R, or SAS, and experience with ML libraries such as scikit-learn, MLib, Keras, TensorFlow, and PyTorch (and related tooling).
  • Ability to write well-abstracted and reusable code in Python, R, or Scala, with comfort navigating Linux environments.
  • Detail-oriented aptitude for managing large and complex datasets, with strong organization and planning.
  • Ability to collaborate and influence business partners and other IS resources to drive analytic projects end to end.
  • Experience working with large datasets and distributed computing tools such as Spark and Hive.
  • Passion for learning and staying current with advanced analytics developments.
  • Biotech / Pharma experience.

Role Details

  • Location: Juncos, PR (onsite)
  • Job type: Contract
  • Minimum experience: 2 years (per education band)
  • Initial contract term: 6 months for the first contract, with high possibility of extension based on performance and budget
  • Openings: 1
  • Administrative shift: weekends and overtime may also be required
  • Expected hiring month: November 2026
