Job Description

General Motors is hiring a Staff Data Scientist to join the AI Engineering and Productivity team in Austin, TX. In this hybrid role, you will help lead AI/ML and data science products designed to deliver reliable, secure, production-grade capabilities and measurable productivity improvements across the product lifecycle.

You will set scientific direction, drive operational robustness, and partner with cross-functional teams to ensure results are delivered on time and with strong methodological and operational quality. The role also emphasizes influence across stakeholders by turning technical tradeoffs, risks, and opportunities into clear business decisions.

What you’ll do

  • Shape scientific direction and help ensure methodological quality and operational robustness across the suite of products you own.
  • Strengthen the scientist community by exploring new methods and technologies, facilitating cross-functional knowledge sharing, providing mentorship, conducting internal reviews, and creating reusable methods and frameworks.
  • Drive outcomes on schedule and within budget by managing risks and maintaining methodological and operational quality to deliver significant, measurable business impact.
  • Collaborate across data engineering, delivery teams, software delivery, and other business units to develop and execute product plans and results.
  • Translate technical tradeoffs, risks, and opportunities into business decisions that align leaders and stakeholders.

Required qualifications

  • 8+ years working with and 3+ years leading advanced analytics, AI/ML and/or operations research initiatives.
  • Demonstrated thought leadership using innovative methodologies and approaches to solve business problems.
  • Deep expertise across multiple AI/ML and analytics domains, including LLMs (preferred) plus areas such as forecasting, deep learning, operations research, prescriptive and predictive methods.
  • Expertise in Python and cloud-based data science platforms (with Databricks preferred), and proficiency in SQL.
  • Experience with generative AI tools and platforms such as Cursor, GitHub, and/or Microsoft Copilot, and tools including Glean and Databricks Genie.
  • Ability to convert ambiguous, high-value business problems into tractable analytical strategies with measurable outcomes.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills.
  • M.S. degree in operations research, engineering, computer science, applied statistics, physics, or a related field. Equivalent additional experience may substitute for an advanced degree.

Preferred qualifications

  • 10+ years working with and 6+ years leading advanced analytics, AI/ML and/or operations research initiatives.
  • Ph.D. in operations research, engineering, computer science, applied statistics, physics, or a related field.
  • Proven ability to lead multi-team member initiatives using novel methods resulting in substantial business impact.
  • Publications, conference talks, patents or other intellectual property, committed open-source contributions, or other external technical recognition.
