Job Description

This role in the Graduate School-Dean's Office supports university-wide reporting and analytics by designing, maintaining, and enhancing data infrastructures for graduate-level use cases. The position integrates data from multiple complex systems and helps stakeholders access accurate metrics through reporting and analytics solutions.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Director of Information Management, the IT Business Intelligence/Data Analyst I designs, maintains, and enhances data infrastructures that support graduate-level reporting and analytics across the university. The role brings together data from multiple sources, collaborates across campus to define reporting needs, and contributes to updates for dashboards, metrics, and analytics tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain data infrastructure to support both routine and ad-hoc reporting for graduate education.
  • Create complex datasets and reports for stakeholder needs including graduate admissions, enrollment, and trend analyses.
  • Use university information systems to produce analytics and metrics for university-wide stakeholders.
  • Support front-end development efforts that improve data accessibility, including contributions to web pages and applications using PHP, WordPress, or related tools.
  • Establish and maintain comprehensive documentation covering data dictionaries, ETL documentation, and workflow records.
  • Conduct regular audits to verify data accuracy and integrity.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot data issues proactively.
  • Collaborate with Graduate School leadership and central offices (including OIT, ISA, EMAS, etc.) to support strategic initiatives and operational needs.
  • Provide data extracts, queries, and custom reports for internal and external requests such as self-assessment data and NSF surveys.
  • Assist departments and campus partners with individual data needs, including routine and ad-hoc requests.
  • Participate in efforts to update or replace outdated datasets, webpages, jobs, and reporting tools.
  • Use tools such as Query Analyzer to analyze query performance and incorporate enhancements to SQL queries.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree. Alternatively, Bachelor’s degree preferably in Computer Science or Business Analytics with zero to two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
  • Experience writing and executing SQL queries.
  • Experience with Predictive Analytics using Python and SAS.
  • Good understanding of normalized and relational databases.
  • Excel data analysis and reporting, including Pivot Tables and Power Queries.
  • Working knowledge of visual analytics and report creation using Power BI and SAS VA.
  • Experience with data manipulation and warehousing tools including SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SAS DI Studio, and Power Automate.
  • Experience scheduling jobs within Windows and SQL Server.
  • Experience with advanced tools such as Query Analyzer and SQL Server Management Studio.
  • Analytic and problem-solving skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Project and time management, plus collaboration and team-building skills.

Technical Skills and Tools

  • Languages: SQL, SAS, Python, Power BI DAX
  • Databases: Relational/normalized databases such as Oracle and MS SQL Server
  • Hands-on experience: SAS, Oracle SQL, Power BI, SSIS, Python, and Oracle PeopleSoft Query Manager
  • Other tools: Excel, Pivot Tables, Power Query, Power BI, SAS VA, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SAS DI Studio, Power Automate, Query Analyzer, SQL Server Management Studio, PHP, WordPress, Windows

Professional Development

  • Participate in relevant training, conferences, and courses related to data and visualization concepts and tools, including Conferences, Certifications and Workshops on Data and Visualization.

Compensation and Schedule

  • Salary: USD 71,000 - 74,105 per year
  • Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 40 hours/week
  • Work location: Raleigh, NC (onsite)
