Job Description

Applied Research Associates, Inc., an employee-owned international research and engineering company, offers an ESOP and a collaborative, growth-focused culture. This on-site Journeyman Data Scientist role is based in Alexandria, VA, and supports a multi-disciplinary team delivering analytics for DHS mission space within an agile environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support data preparation by cleaning, processing, and transforming both structured and unstructured data.
  • Contribute to building analytics, machine learning and statistical models, and conduct exploratory data analysis.
  • Develop visualizations to reveal patterns, trends, and key performance indicators.
  • Collaborate with senior data scientists and developers to translate user requirements into concrete analytic tasks.
  • Participate in designing, testing, and deploying data and analytic workflows.
  • Develop scripts and tooling to automate routine data tasks.
  • Aid in creating documentation, user guides, and training materials.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies, analytic methods, and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate within an agile team and participate in sprint activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, statistics, computer science, mathematics, or a related field with 5+ years of experience, or a Master’s degree with 3+ years of experience.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain DHS suitability clearance.
  • Experience analyzing large datasets and applying machine learning tools and statistical techniques to generate solutions.
  • Proficiency in data science scripting tools and software (Python, R, SQL, SAS) and data visualization platforms (Tableau, Qlik, Power BI).
  • Experience with data packages such as pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, PyTorch, and visualization libraries such as matplotlib, seaborn, and Plotly.
  • Experience working with APIs, CSV/JSON datasets, and relational databases.
  • Clear writing ability to produce documentation, user guides, and training materials.

Experience

  • 5 - 8 years: Experience in data science

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s or better in Data Science or related field
