Mathematical Statistician (Data Scientist) - Direct Hire

Responsibilities

• Develop and evaluate statistical models, sampling methods, forecasting, classification, and other quantitative approaches to identify trends, assess program performance, measure outcomes, and support evidence-based decisions; identify data sources, assess quality, and perform data preparation and integration.
• Conduct research studies, exploratory analyses, hypothesis testing, model validation, sensitivity analyses, and other statistical investigations to produce defensible, actionable findings; integrate and analyze data from multiple internal and external sources.
• Review research proposals and provide recommendations to management; prepare technical reports, briefing materials, presentations, and documentation describing methodologies, assumptions, findings, limitations, and recommendations.
• Define study objectives, develop project methodologies, establish analytical requirements, and select appropriate statistical techniques to meet goals; ensure analytical products are technically sound, reproducible, and aligned with objectives.
• Serve as a technical consultant to managers, analysts, program officials, and project teams on statistical methodologies, research design, data science applications, quantitative analysis, and interpretation of results.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship – Must be a U.S. Citizen or National and provide proof of citizenship.
• Selective Service Registration – Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered or exempt.
• Personal Identity Verification (PIV) – Provide 2 forms of identification from Form I-9, unexpired originals or certified copies.
• Minimum age – Federal employment minimum is 18, or 16 with high school graduation or equivalent.
• IOR BASIC REQUIREMENTS for GS-1529 Mathematical Statistician (Data Scientist) – Degree with at least 24 semester hours in mathematics/statistics (12 math, 6 statistics) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Education substitute for specialized experience – Three full academic years of graduate study in mathematics, statistics, or related fields; or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or combination of education and experience.
• GS-1529-11 specialized experience – One year at GS-09 level; data mining using CRISP-DM or SEMMA; working with structured and unstructured data; applying ML, NLP, graph theory, and deep learning; coding in R, Python, SQL, or Java.
• GS-1529-12 specialized experience – One year at GS-11 level; applying statistical theories to design, data analysis, forecasting, and operations research; data mining with CRISP-DM/SEMMA; ML, NLP, graph theory, deep learning; coding in R/Python/SQL/Java; working with multiple data types; data visualization.
• GS-1529-13 specialized experience – One year at GS-12 level; project management on data science projects; planning and executing analytics projects; data mining with CRISP-DM/SEMMA; structured/unstructured data; ML/NLP; coding in R/Python/SQL/Java; creating/querying datastores; data visualization.
