Senior Data Scientist

On-site in Alexandria, Virginia, you will join Applied Research Associates, Inc. as a Senior Data Scientist supporting a multi-disciplinary team delivering data analysis and visualization solutions for DHS missions. The role emphasizes hands-on analytics, translating data into actionable insights, and collaborating in an agile environment. You will develop basic models, create compelling visualizations, and contribute to training materials and documentation while staying current with emerging technologies and methods.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate teams as they process, clean, and transform structured and unstructured data.
• Support the development of analytics, machine learning and statistical models, and exploratory data analysis.
• Design visualizations to reveal patterns, trends, and performance indicators.
• Partner with customers to translate requirements into concrete analytic tasks.
• Lead the design, testing, and deployment of data and analytic workflows.
• Build and deploy scripts and tools that automate routine data tasks.
• Contribute to documentation, user guides, and training materials.
• Keep current with new technologies, analytic methods, and industry best practices.
• Collaborate with and potentially lead an agile team, contributing to sprint activities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in data science, statistics, computer science, mathematics, or related field with 8+ years of experience, or Master’s degree with 6+ years of experience.
• U.S. citizenship is required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DHS Suitability clearance.
• Experience with Agile development practices and collaborative tools such as Jira and Gitlab.
• Experience in project management, coordinating with customers, and establishing scope, budget, and timelines for milestones and product releases.
• Experience performing analysis on large datasets and knowledge of machine learning tools and statistical techniques to deliver solutions.
• Proficiency with data science scripting tools and software (Python, R, SQL, SAS) and data visualization tools (Tableau, Qlik, Power BI).
• Experience with common data packages (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, PyTorch) and visualization libraries (matplotlib, seaborn, Plotly).
• Experience with APIs, CSV/JSON datasets, and relational databases.
• Ability to write clearly and produce documentation, user guides, and training materials.
