Senior Data Scientist
Job Description
Zillow.com is hiring a Senior Data Scientist to apply advanced analytics and machine learning to hard, high-impact business problems. In this remote role, you will own end-to-end data science work, partner with cross-functional teams, and help translate models into scalable, data-informed decisions that improve products and customer experiences.
This position focuses on rigorous model development, careful evaluation, and practical deployment, with an emphasis on measurable outcomes and responsible AI usage. You will also contribute to the team’s learning culture by mentoring less experienced members.
What you’ll do
- Drive end-to-end data science projects, from problem framing and hypothesis design through model development, validation, and deployment, ensuring alignment with strategic business goals and customer needs.
- Create advanced statistical and machine learning models, such as prediction, recommendation, or optimization, using large and complex datasets, and evaluate performance with a focus on accuracy, fairness, and robustness.
- Partner with data engineering and product teams to design and implement data pipelines, feature engineering methods, and experimentation frameworks that support scalable and repeatable analyses and model delivery.
- Convert complex quantitative results into clear insights and recommendations for technical and non-technical stakeholders to inform product roadmaps, operational decisions, and measurable business outcomes.
- Collaborate with product, engineering, analytics, and business partners to identify high-impact opportunities, define success metrics, and prioritize data science work based on customer value and feasibility.
- Advocate for best practices in data quality, model monitoring, documentation, and responsible AI usage to improve the reliability and trustworthiness of data-driven solutions.
- Mentor teammates by sharing domain knowledge, reviewing work, and supporting a culture of learning, experimentation, and continuous improvement in data science methods and tools.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
- 8+ years of professional experience applying statistical analysis, machine learning, or advanced analytics to real-world business problems in a data-driven environment.
- Proven experience working with large, complex datasets using Python or R, and querying languages such as SQL.
- Experience designing and evaluating experiments or other causal inference approaches, including using metrics to assess model and product impact.
- Experience collaborating across functions (for example, with product, engineering, or operations) to deliver and operationalize data science solutions at scale.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Compensation and benefits
- USD 148,600 - 237,400 per yearly (standard base pay range varies by location).
- Equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance, and location (eligible for equity awards based on these factors).
- In California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC: standard base pay range is $148,600.00 - $237,400.00 annually.
- In Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia: standard base pay range is $141,200.00 - $225,600.00 annually.
- Employees in this role will not be paid below the salary threshold for exempt employees in the state where they reside.
