Job Description

The Senior Data Scientist will design and deploy digital science capabilities that combine data science, predictive modeling, simulation, and machine learning to support product and technology development. This role acts as a technical liaison and drives pilots from early opportunity identification through implementation, adoption, and outcome measurement across laboratory automation, Forge, and RepairStack.

Role Summary

Own the end-to-end translation of technical challenges into scalable digital solutions, including the integration of models into practical workflows or applications. The position emphasizes predictive, statistical, machine-learning, and simulation methods to address formulation, process, application, performance, and other high-value technical problems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and prioritize digital science opportunities that accelerate innovation and improve laboratory productivity, with primary focus on laboratory automation and additional application to Forge and RepairStack.
  • Develop, validate, implement, and continuously improve predictive, statistical, machine-learning, and simulation models for formulation, process, application, performance, and other high-value technical challenges.
  • Define laboratory data requirements and perform data acquisition, cleaning, normalization, and structuring for sparse or unstructured datasets.
  • Partner with digital and data teams to improve data quality, accessibility, usability, and reusable data structures.
  • Collaborate with product developers, laboratory scientists, subject-matter experts, Corporate Research Laboratory teams, and digital technology teams to translate technical challenges into deployable digital solutions.
  • Integrate models into usable workflows or applications in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Own pilot delivery from opportunity identification through implementation and adoption, including scope, priorities, milestones, technical decisions, dependencies, validation, governance, stakeholder alignment, measurement of business impact, and contributions to the long-term Digital Lab roadmap.
  • Comply with corporate policies, procedures, and security standards while performing assigned duties.
  • Support an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) culture by following safety policies, identifying hazards, and participating in continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in science, math, or engineering (completed and verified prior to start).
  • Five (5) years of combined experience in data science, statistical modeling, machine learning, simulation, numerical methods, or related technical work, including qualifying graduate research in a private, public, government, or military environment.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: USD 145,676 - 178,049 per yearly.

Work Location

This role uses an on-site working model, requiring the employee to work at least four days a week at the 3M Center in Maplewood, MN.

  • The expected compensation range is $145,676 - $178,049, including base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible.
  • The range is a good faith estimate for this position.
  • Specific compensation may vary based on relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience.
