Job Description

The Travelers Companies, Inc. is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to advance how Customer Experience teams use advanced analytics and Generative AI. This onsite role in Hartford, CT blends building production-ready GenAI solutions with enabling adoption across the organization, supported by mentorship and technical collaboration.

What you’ll do

  • Manage portions of business or technical projects focused on the design and development of analytical and Generative AI solutions.
  • Design, build, and evaluate reusable GenAI tools, skills, agents, and workflows, including rapid prototyping of emerging capabilities and scaling successful experiments toward production.
  • Support rollout and enablement of approved AI tools through technical guidance, experimentation, training, office hours, and hands-on partnership with end users.
  • Set and manage expectations with business partners for small projects, identify potential conflicts, and build consensus with limited guidance.
  • Communicate analysis, insights, and results to team, peers, and business partners, tailoring communication to the audience as needed.
  • Act as a mentor and resource for less experienced analytic talent, including onboarding new employees and interns, and supporting recruiting and talent assessment efforts.
  • Share expertise with the community through discussions, presentations, or peer reviews.
  • Support training and skill development initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a STEM related field (or equivalent) and 5+ years of related experience.
  • Advanced working knowledge of modeling, GenAI, research, analytics, or actuarial work.
  • GenAI fundamentals including prompt design, tool use and agents, RAG pipelines, fine-tuning versus retrieval tradeoffs, hallucination mitigation, and grounding/attribution.
  • Strong grasp of value creation and business model concepts.
  • Advanced knowledge of multiple statistical software programs.
  • Ability to develop advanced models and interpret model results, including application of advanced statistics underlying data models.
  • Ability to develop emerging statistical procedures to work.
  • Advanced knowledge in 2–3 of the following: GenAI, Regression, Classification, Machine Vision, Natural Language Processing, Deep Learning, and Statistical modeling.

Compensation

Annual base salary range: $146,400.00 - $241,600.00.

The actual salary depends on factors including scope, complexity, and location; the candidate’s skills, education, training, credentials, and experience; and other conditions of employment. Employees may also be eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

As a Manager & Sr. Data Scientist, you will build sophisticated models and Generative AI solutions that enhance customer experience, including using AI to analyze imagery, text, and other unstructured data, while also employing data storytelling to communicate insights to stakeholders.
