Lead Applied AI Engineer II

Deloitte is seeking a Lead Applied AI Engineer II in Washington, DC, onsite, to drive hands-on engineering across multiple high-visibility initiatives with a clear emphasis on customer outcomes and business value. The role models leadership, mentoring cross-functional teams to design, develop, and deploy advanced software solutions.

Responsibilities

• Outcome driven accountability for customer and business results; develop engineering solutions that address complex problems and deliver tangible value with high quality, lean designs and implementations.
• Technical leadership and advocacy for products, ensuring code integrity, feasibility, and alignment with business and customer goals; lead requirements analysis, architecture and component design, development, testing, integrations, and support.
• Engineering craftsmanship with enterprise standards in mind; manage dependencies, code design, implementation quality, data, and ongoing maintenance and operations; stay hands-on, continuously learn new languages and frameworks; produce technical specifications, write maintainable code, review peers, and mentor engineers to ensure quality.
• Customer centric engineering through lean, accelerated experimentation to address customer needs; engage with customers and product teams before, during, and after delivery to ensure timely and appropriate solutions.
• Incremental and iterative delivery that favors action and evidence over extensive planning; navigate complexity and deliver lean, supportable, and maintainable solutions.
• Cross-functional collaboration and integration with product management, experience, and delivery; synthesize diverse perspectives to balance feasibility, viability, usability, and value; foster a collaborative environment that drives innovation.
• Advanced technical proficiency across modern software engineering practices, including AI and agentic SDLC; enable daily product deployments with full automation from discovery to production and operations, with quality checks through the SSDLC lifecycle; model these techniques to optimize delivery and continuous improvement.
• Domain expertise with rapid acquisition of relevant knowledge; translate business needs, architectures, and UX/UI designs into technical specifications and code; contribute as a flexible, quality-focused team member.
• Effective communication and influence to articulate complex technical concepts clearly; shape decisions with evidence-based trade-offs and coherent narratives aligning technical solutions with business objectives.
• Engagement and collaborative co-creation with product engineering teams at all levels, including customers as needed; build constructive relationships and drive consensus to deliver feasible solutions.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, data science, machine learning, or a related discipline.
• 6+ years of experience with most of the following: Angular, React, NodeJS, Python, C#, .NET, Java, SQL/NoSQL, PyTorch, TensorFlow, LangChain, LangGraph, and unit testing frameworks.
• 3+ years building AI/ML applications with hands-on GenAI experience across LLM integration (OpenAI, Anthropic, or open-source models), RAG pipelines, prompt engineering, and vector databases.
• 3+ years of cloud native engineering using FaaS, PaaS, or micro-services on Azure, AWS, or GCP, including their AI/ML services such as Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, or Vertex AI.
• 1+ years establishing engineering standards, including actively leading, mentoring, and guiding team members in adoption and continuous improvement.
• Prior software engineering experience with Business Context Diagrams, sequence/activity/state/entity relationship/data flow diagrams, OOP/OOD, data structures, algorithms, code instrumentation, and AI augmented spec driven development.
• Experience with XP, Lean, DevSecOps, SRE, ADO, GitHub, SonarQube, MLflow, and agentic AI frameworks (LangFuse, LangSmith, or equivalent) to deliver high quality products rapidly.
