The Principal Data Analyst role in Richmond, VA (hybrid) partners with Long Term Care Claims Operations to translate data into strategic insights, build scalable Power BI solutions, and guide forecasting, capacity planning, and operational improvements through strong data storytelling. Compensation ranges from USD 108,100 to 209,000 per year. A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 6 years of experience in data analytics are required.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a senior analytical advisor and trusted partner for Long Term Care Claims, Customer Service, and Workforce Management, delivering insights that inform strategic and operational decisions
  • Design, develop, and own scalable Power BI solutions, including datasets, semantic models, reports, and dashboards aligned to enterprise standards
  • Engage in data modeling and DAX, focusing on performance optimization and efficient query design
  • Ensure security and role-based access, workspace governance, lifecycle management, and deployment standards
  • Create dashboards and reports that are intuitive, well-documented, and optimized for executive and operational audiences with strong data storytelling
  • Uphold reporting standards to prevent ad hoc, duplicative, or inconsistent solutions across teams
  • Develop complex, highly optimized SQL queries to extract, transform, and analyze large structured datasets
  • Translate ambiguous business questions into defined analytical approaches, metrics, and success measures
  • Deliver diagnostic and forward-looking insights, including forecasting, scenario modeling, capacity planning, and cost-benefit analysis
  • Identify emerging trends, performance drivers, risks, and opportunities affecting customer experience, operational efficiency, and financial outcomes
  • Present findings and recommendations to senior and executive leadership with clear, actionable data narratives
  • Validate, reconcile, and certify data from multiple teams and systems to ensure accuracy and consistency
  • Proactively identify data quality issues, anomalies, and upstream gaps; collaborate with source system owners, data engineering, and governance to resolve
  • Establish and reinforce data validation standards, controls, and best practices
  • Apply trend analysis and variance detection to surface data or process risks before they affect decisions
  • Serve as a Power BI subject matter expert on usage, data interpretation, and reporting design
  • Upskill business and technical teams through coaching, documentation, and informal training
  • Provide troubleshooting and advisory support for Power BI solutions and datasets
  • Foster a culture of data literacy, shared ownership, and continuous improvement across supported teams
  • Mentor junior analysts and elevate overall analytical maturity through leadership by example
  • Partner with stakeholders across LTC Claims, Customer Service, Operations, Finance, WFM, and other functions to align analytics with business outcomes
  • Collaborate with data engineering, analytics, and data governance to align reporting with enterprise data strategy
  • Coordinate across departments to integrate new data sources and evolve reporting as business needs change
  • Contribute to complex, cross-functional initiatives where analytics and reporting are critical to success, operating independently while aligning with leadership on high-impact decisions

Requirements

  • Expert-level analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize complex data into clear insights and recommendations
  • Proven ability to present insights and recommendations to senior and executive leadership with confidence and clarity
  • Experience translating business needs into technical solutions and actionable analytics
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple complex priorities, and influence
  • Curious, highly analytical mindset with a passion for using data to drive strategy and change
  • Bachelor's degree in analytics, data science, economics, mathematics, computer science, or a related quantitative field
  • 6+ years of progressive experience in data analytics with demonstrated impact in complex environments
  • Advanced SQL expertise (Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or equivalent), including query optimization, complex joins, CTEs, and performance tuning
  • Power BI expert with data modeling, DAX, visual design best practices, and executive storytelling
  • Strong experience working with large structured datasets using SQL, Excel, and Python

Additional Information

This role is not eligible for employment visa sponsorship. National Range: $108,100-$168,000. High-Cost Range (includes New York): $135,100-$209,000. This position follows a national market-based pay range. Actual compensation varies by location, experience, skills, and other factors. In addition to base salary, the role is eligible to participate in a bonus incentive plan, with incentive compensation determined by individual and company performance and not guaranteed.
