Principal Machine Learning Engineer, Agentic AI

Job Description

This role is based in Oregon with remote work options. The compensation package includes a base salary range of USD 204,400 to 326,600 per year, complemented by equity awards tied to experience, performance, and location. You will lead hands-on development of multimodal foundational AI technologies on Zillow's Agentic AI team, prototyping, evaluating, and deploying models that span perception, language understanding, deep reasoning, and agent decision making at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, and build multi-agent systems using frameworks such as AgentSDK and LangChain/LangGraph to enable autonomous, context-aware interactions.
  • Leverage advanced GenAI models, including reasoning models and real-time voice interfaces, to develop agentic prototypes and mature them into product-level agentic skills for deployment.
  • Adopt a build, learn, and pivot mindset while maintaining a high standard for shipping software to production.
  • Mentor engineers in selecting appropriate technologies for agentic AI solutions and promote a culture of innovation with responsible AI usage.
  • Synthesize complex research findings and system designs into actionable insights for diverse audiences, including executives.
  • Stay at the cutting edge of agentic AI paradigms to drive product innovation and practical impact.
  • Act as the focal point for applied science projects, aligning timelines and prioritization across teams.
  • Continuously refine experimentation, A/B testing, and production rollout processes to balance rapid innovation with reliability and responsible deployment.

Requirements

  • A master's degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with emphasis on foundational LLMs, agentic AI, reinforcement learning, AI planning, or natural language processing.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience building large-scale, high-impact solutions, ideally with recent work on agent-based systems or multi-agent collaboration.
  • Experience developing dialogue systems capable of long conversations, multi-step reasoning, and context-rich decision-making.
  • Experience deploying and scaling AI services to handle hundreds of millions of daily interactions with high availability and low latency, plus robust fault tolerance.
  • Publishing high-impact research in top AI/ML venues is a plus.
