Job Description

This SAS Data Engineer role supports a SAS Datalake environment with a strong focus on storage and compute system upgrades, ongoing maintenance, and production troubleshooting. The position is onsite in Austin, TX and includes Linux systems support, automation, monitoring, and disaster recovery planning across multiple platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate Isilon and NetApp cluster capacity and performance using OneFS and ONTAP metrics to determine whether node replacements or upgrades are required.
  • Coordinate integration of new Isilon and NetApp nodes, ensuring compatibility and minimizing downtime during scalability activities.
  • Oversee hardware upgrades and replacements for HPC, Kubernetes, Greenplum, Impala, and GPU server systems to improve compute and graphics processing capability.
  • Use Impala Insight IQ and NetApp tools to diagnose and address throughput, latency, and capacity-related issues.
  • Leverage OneFS and ONTAP troubleshooting tools, logs, and error signals to identify and resolve system errors and hardware malfunctions.
  • Troubleshoot performance bottlenecks and system failures across HPC, Kubernetes, Greenplum, GPU servers, Impala, and NetApp environments.
  • Implement continuous monitoring using Isilon OneFS event logs, NetApp ONTAP tooling, SNMP alerts, and Grafana to detect anomalies early.
  • Schedule maintenance through Isilon and NetApp software suites to support optimal storage performance and system longevity.
  • Maintain server environments across HPC, Kubernetes, Greenplum, GPU, Impala, and NetApp, including updates and routine system health checks.
  • Apply Impala patches and NetApp patches and firmware updates to nodes and system software to keep components secure and current.
  • Validate software changes in a sandbox environment before rolling updates across the cluster.
  • Plan and manage patch installations across HPC, Kubernetes, Greenplum, GPU servers, Impala, and NetApp to preserve software integrity and security posture.
  • Provide storage optimization guidance for Isilon and NetApp, including data migration, system expansion, and configuration tuning.
  • Support optimization of HPC, Kubernetes, Greenplum, and GPU server configurations to improve computational resources and data processing workflows.
  • Assist with the design, configuration, and optimization of NetApp storage architectures for efficient data management.
  • Coordinate phased decommissioning of aging Isilon and NetApp hardware in alignment with environmental standards and security protocols.
  • Arrange replacement of EOL hardware for HPC, Kubernetes, Greenplum, GPU servers, Isilon, and NetApp to prevent performance degradation.
  • Ensure Impala, NetApp, HPC, Kubernetes, Greenplum, and GPU storage solutions are integrated and compatible with the broader IT infrastructure.
  • Develop strategies for integrating storage and processing technologies to maximize performance and resource utilization.
  • Maintain detailed documentation for system configurations, upgrades, and troubleshooting actions to support repeatability and team onboarding.
  • Conduct training sessions or create guides so internal teams can share knowledge about system operations and best practices.
  • Plan and test disaster recovery procedures for Impala, NetApp, and HPC/Kubernetes/Greenplum/GPU servers to support data availability and business continuity.
  • Ensure backup and recovery processes are implemented and regularly tested to reduce data loss risk.
  • Develop capacity planning approaches to scale storage and compute resources based on performance trends and business needs.
  • Create and maintain automation scripts for monitoring, data migration, and maintenance to improve efficiency and reduce manual errors.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational security standards and relevant regulations during maintenance, upgrades, and troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate with security teams on best practices and hardening measures for Isilon, NetApp, HPC, Kubernetes, Greenplum, and GPU servers.
  • Support data center activities including racking and initial installation of servers and storage equipment, with attention to cabling, power connections, and networking setup.
