Senior Data Analyst

Auctane is building analytics that help ShipStation Global business teams make better decisions. In this hybrid role, you will design, build, and own reporting and analytics deliverables that turn business questions into governed metrics, reliable transformations, and usable dashboards across the reporting stack.

Location: Austin, TX (hybrid). Office time is 3 days per week in the Austin or Dallas, Texas area.

What you’ll do

• Partner directly with business stakeholders to convert ambiguous requests into clear analytics deliverables.
• Lead discovery conversations with Finance, Accounting, Sales, Marketing, and Product to identify the decision or business problem behind each request.
• Translate open-ended asks into documented requirements, including metric definitions, grain, dimensionality, filters, refresh cadence, and acceptance criteria.
• Challenge assumptions and reframe work when the requested output would not answer the underlying question.
• Build modular, tested, version-controlled analytics transformations in dbt on BigQuery, and support Databricks as the ShipStation Global platform expands, using layered staging, intermediate, and mart patterns.
• Use advanced SQL skills such as window functions, incremental logic, complex joins, and performance optimization through partitioning, clustering, and cost-aware design.
• Implement data quality controls with dbt tests, source freshness checks, and anomaly monitoring so issues are caught before stakeholders encounter them.
• Develop in Git with pull-request review and CI/CD, treating analytics code like production software.
• Maintain LookML views, explores, derived tables, and reusable measures to define metrics once and report them consistently.
• Build and maintain Looker dashboards, Looks, schedules, and alerts, and develop Power BI semantic models, DAX measures, and reports as reporting consolidates across platforms.
• Optimize dashboard performance and query cost, including content organization, folder structure, and row-level access controls.
• Enable self-service by documenting metric definitions, training stakeholders, and building durable assets that reduce recurring ad hoc requests.
• Conduct exploratory and root-cause analysis to explain what drives changes in sales volume, revenue, margin, customer retention, and operational performance.
• Reconcile analytics outputs against source systems and finance reporting, investigating discrepancies and communicating them clearly.
• Write up findings, caveats, and recommendations in plain language for a non-technical executive audience.
• Contribute to migrating, rationalizing, and consolidating reporting assets as ShipStation Global standardizes its stack across GCP and BigQuery, Databricks, Looker, and Power BI.
• Automate recurring manual reporting using Python and scheduled orchestration.
• Document models, metric definitions, and data lineage in dbt docs and Confluence.
• Follow and improve team standards for naming, testing, code review, and release management.
• Handle sensitive customer, financial, and employee data in line with company security and privacy policy.

What you’ll bring

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Analytics, Engineering, Statistics, Economics, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
• 5+ years building business intelligence and analytics solutions on a cloud data platform.
• 3+ years of advanced SQL in a production analytics environment.
• 3+ years hands-on dbt experience building and maintaining production models.
• 3+ years of dashboard and report development in a modern BI tool, with Looker and LookML strongly preferred.
• Experience gathering requirements directly from business stakeholders with limited direction.
• Working experience with Google Cloud Platform, especially BigQuery.
• Proficiency with Python and Git-based development workflows.

What will help you stand out

• Advanced SQL for analytical queries, window functions, and performance and cost optimization in columnar cloud warehouses.
• Hands-on analytics engineering with dbt, including modular models, tests, macros, snapshots, documentation, and deployment through CI/CD.
• Depth in at least one modern cloud data warehouse or lakehouse such as BigQuery, Databricks, or equivalent, including partitioning, clustering, incremental strategies, and cost management.
• Semantic layer development in LookML or an equivalent metrics modeling layer.
• Dashboard and report development in Looker, Power BI, or Tableau with strong visualization and information design principles.
• Python for automation, data manipulation, and API integration.
• Adept use of AI tools such as Claude Code, Gemini Enterprise, Replit, etc.
• Git-based version control and collaborative code review.
• Ability to operate effectively without fully specified requirements by defining the problem, scoping work, stating assumptions, and communicating trade-offs.
• Strong written and verbal communication, including explaining metric definitions and analytical caveats to non-technical audiences.
• Business curiosity and willingness to learn shipping, logistics, and subscription revenue by digging into source systems and speaking with business owners.
• Ownership and follow-through while managing multiple stakeholders and shifting priorities.
