Job Description

Columbia Sportswear Company is hiring a Hybrid Senior Data Engineer based near Portland, Oregon. This role supports analytics and reporting needs by building dimensional data models, reliable ELT/ETL pipelines, and governed Power BI semantic layers, with a focus on data quality, lineage, and security.

Working onsite four days per week, you will help design and deliver governed data products and ingestion workflows that move data into modern lake and warehouse environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement Kimball-style dimensional models and analytical datasets
  • Develop data transformations with tests, documentation, and data contracts
  • Build and maintain ELT/ETL workflows into data warehouses and lakes, including orchestration, monitoring, and cost and performance tuning
  • Create and maintain governed Power BI semantic models and datasets
  • Enable self-service analytics while enforcing data quality, lineage, and security policies
  • Share data and tool practices that increase organizational access to data and support ad hoc analysis to drive data-informed decisions
  • Explore internal and external data sources and collaborate with BSAs and Data Engineering teams to ingest data into data lake/data bricks/synapse for analysis and development
  • Elicit and clarify business requirements
  • Document specifications, KPIs, and acceptance tests
  • Deliver demos, office hours, and enablement
  • Implement CI/CD with Git-based workflows, unit and integration testing, and data observability using SLAs/SLOs
  • Profile SQL and storage strategies, including caching and compute scaling approaches
  • Contribute to catalog and lineage, RBAC/ABAC controls, PII handling, and retention standards

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, or related field (foreign equivalent accepted)
  • 36 months of experience in the job offered or related position
  • Experience with SQL development, including complex queries, stored procedures, views, joins, and performance tuning in SQL Server environments
  • ETL/ELT development using SSIS or equivalent tools, including data mapping, transformations, scheduling, and job automation
  • Power BI development, including semantic models, dashboards, reports, and publishing to Power BI Service
  • Experience creating DAX measures
  • Experience with Power Query (M) transformations
  • Dimensional modeling experience, designing star and snowflake schemas using Kimball or equivalent methodologies
  • Data validation and profiling, including dataset optimization, incremental refresh, and cross-system data reconciliation
  • Experience working with databases and cloud platforms such as Azure SQL or Snowflake
  • Experience using JIRA for issue tracking and project management
