Job Description
Blue Origin is hiring a senior data engineering contributor on the Supply Chain Business Intelligence & Data Science team in Seattle, WA (onsite). In this role, you will own the supply chain data model architecture and strategy that powers Databricks-based analytics and a self-serve analytics platform. You will lead end-to-end modeling, governance, and the AWS-hosted application architecture, while partnering closely with the Enterprise Technology (ET) data platform team.
What you’ll work on
- Architect and take ownership of the primary supply chain data models in Databricks, including the most heavily used data assets across the organization built on top of ET-provided data.
- Set the strategy and architecture for self-serve data for supply chain stakeholders, including semantic layers, curated data marts, access patterns, and documentation so business users can find and trust metrics without engineering support.
- Act as the primary technical liaison with the ET data platform team by defining data contracts, advocating for supply chain data needs, and adapting supply chain models as the upstream platform evolves.
- Define and enforce data modeling standards, business logic ownership, and data quality frameworks to ensure downstream consumers receive consistent, trusted data.
- Guide architecture for AWS-hosted internal web applications and self-serve analytics tools that sit on top of the core data models, focusing on performance, scalability, and usability.
- Set engineering standards for GitLab CI/CD, VS Code-based development, testing, and deployment, and mentor Data Engineer I–III team members on data modeling and self-serve enablement best practices.
- Evaluate and integrate AI-assisted development and analytics tooling (examples include AI-powered query assistants and natural language interfaces) to expand self-serve capabilities.
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact between supply chain leadership and engineering to ensure data models and self-serve tools evolve with changing business needs.
- Ensure comprehensive, reliable coverage of supply chain metrics across procurement, inventory, logistics, supplier performance, and manufacturing supply, resolving gaps and inconsistencies as the business scales.
Core qualifications
- 6+ years building and operating production data pipelines and data models, including experience leading data modeling architecture decisions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Expert-level proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Deep experience with Databricks (or a comparable lakehouse platform) architecting large-scale, business-facing data models.
- Proven experience partnering with or consuming from a centralized enterprise data platform team, including managing data contracts and adapting to upstream changes.
- Strong experience architecting on AWS, including S3, Lambda, Glue, ECS/EKS, RDS, and API Gateway (examples listed).
- Proven experience with Git-based CI/CD workflows (GitLab preferred) and modern software engineering practices.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and lead cross-functional technical initiatives.
- Due to access to export-controlled data, must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
Technologies you’ll use
Python, SQL, Databricks, AWS (S3), AWS (Lambda), AWS (Glue), AWS (ECS/EKS), AWS (RDS), AWS (API Gateway), GitLab, VS Code, and Git-based CI/CD.
