Job Description

Senior Systems Engineer (AWS Data Engineer) focused on healthcare data platform modernization, AWS data architecture, and enabling business reporting, with remote work and VA department alignment.

Responsibilities

  • Spearhead the next phase of the healthcare data platform modernization
  • Advance the MSSQL XML object store toward a scalable, cloud-native AWS data stack
  • Enable stakeholders and analysts to run fast SQL-based reports and queries against healthcare data with ease
  • Assess and select an optimal AWS data strategy for the platform
  • Evaluate AWS-native storage and query options for the XML object store data, considering S3 + Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, and OpenSearch based on query patterns, reporting needs, cost, and scalability
  • Design and implement a reporting and query layer that lets non-technical users execute relational SQL queries with familiar tooling
  • Plan the migration path for XML object store data from MSSQL into the target AWS platform, specifying storage formats, partitioning, and data organization for performance
  • Create and maintain AWS data catalog(s), schemas, and metadata management to keep object store data discoverable and queryable by business users
  • Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services through partitioning, compression, file formats, and pattern tuning
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into durable, performant data models and query patterns
  • Coordinate with backend C#/.Net engineers to ensure clean data flows from EDI processing pipelines into the new data layer
  • Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines for data infrastructure using AWS-native tools
  • Apply Infrastructure as Code practices using CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform
  • Document architecture decisions, data flows, and data dictionaries for technical and non-technical audiences

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software or data engineering experience with a strong AWS focus
  • Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in production enterprise or healthcare environments
  • Track record evaluating and selecting AWS data services to meet reporting and querying needs
  • Experience delivering reporting or analytics solutions for non-technical business users
  • Hands-on AWS experience across data services such as S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, and CloudWatch
  • Strong SQL skills and ability to design relational query layers over semi-structured data (XML, JSON)
  • Experience working with XML-heavy data stores (parsing, querying, and transforming XML at scale)
  • Ability to evaluate trade-offs across AWS data services and recommend architectures based on cost, performance, and business requirements
  • Familiarity with AWS analytics and BI tooling, including Athena, QuickSight, Redshift, or equivalents
  • Proficiency with Git and GitHub, including branching strategies and pull request workflows
  • Knowledge of CI/CD practices and AWS-native tooling (CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy)
  • IaC experience with AWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform
  • Strong ability to communicate architectural decisions and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience translating business reporting requirements into technical data models
  • Comfort driving ambiguous architecture decisions to resolution with limited direction
  • Experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and JIRA
  • Strong documentation habits, including architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks
