Summit Utilities, Inc. is hiring an Analytics Engineer II to help build reliable analytics data products that support reporting, regulatory submissions, and day-to-day operational decisions. This hybrid role is based in Little Rock, AR, with the work centered on independent delivery of analytics engineering changes in Microsoft Fabric and Azure SQL.
In this position, you will design, develop, test, and maintain dbt models that transform raw source data into governed datasets used across one or more subject areas. You will also contribute to the standards, quality checks, documentation, and delivery workflows that keep the data lifecycle dependable from ingestion through consumption.
What you’ll do
- Design, build, and maintain dbt models that produce governed, analytics-ready datasets across subject areas.
- Develop and maintain dbt schema tests (not_null, unique, accepted_values, relationships) and implement source freshness checks aligned to data quality SLAs.
- Optimize SQL transformations for performance, cost-efficiency (CU usage), and maintainability in Microsoft Fabric and Azure SQL.
- Investigate and remediate root causes of data discrepancies across upstream and downstream systems by partnering with Data Engineers.
- Collect and document data requirements from Data Analysts, business partners, and regulatory teams, translating needs into dbt model designs.
- Maintain dbt project structure, including refs, sources, YAML configurations, packages (dbt_utils, dbt_expectations), and incremental materializations.
- Author clear, business-friendly documentation in dbt’s documentation site, including model purpose, column definitions, and lineage notes.
- Collaborate with Data Engineers on ingestion, modeling, and monitoring standards and pipeline requirements.
- Contribute to source control and CI/CD for dbt projects, including pull request review and deployment automation.
- Support testing and validation for enhancements, schema changes, and source onboarding.
- Mentor Analytics Engineer I peers through pair-programming, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.
- Participate in standups, sprint planning, code reviews, and architecture discussions.
- Build working knowledge of utility data domains including billing, AMI, SCADA, SAP, and GIS and the data quality expectations of each operational system.
What you’ll bring
- 3–6 years of experience in analytics engineering, data engineering, data analysis, or BI development.
- 3 years minimum of relevant experience (minimum experience requirement).
- A Bachelor’s degree in data Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field preferred; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining dbt models in a production or near-production environment.
- Strong experience with relational databases, including query writing, optimization, and understanding stored procedures.
- Demonstrated cloud experience using Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL, AWS, or similar platforms.
- Familiarity with source control and CI/CD workflows for data or analytics projects.
- Proficiency in SQL for querying, transformation, and analysis, including complex joins, CTEs, window functions, and subqueries.
- Working knowledge of dbt, including model development, schema tests, packages, and understanding refs and sources.
- Solid understanding of ETL/ELT concepts and the data lifecycle from ingestion through consumption.
- Familiarity with data governance and metadata management practices.
- Ability to gather requirements, document assumptions, and translate analytical needs into dbt model designs.
- Skilled at root cause analysis and triage across upstream and downstream systems.
- Familiarity with API integrations and flat file ingestion (CSV, JSON, XML), and SAP data structures.
- Ability to work independently and own portions of delivery from requirements through deployment.
- Strong documentation habits and ability to communicate technical decisions to teammates and stakeholders.
- Proficiency with source control tools such as Git, Azure DevOps, and GitHub.
- Working knowledge of natural gas distribution and utility data systems (billing, AMI, SCADA) and an understanding of data quality needs across operational systems.
- Friendly, solution-oriented approach aligned with Summit’s PEAKS values.
