Crime Data Analyst

The City of Gulf Shores, Alabama offers an on-site Crime Data Analyst role that supports police operations and informed decision making through crime and intelligence analysis, data evaluation, and reporting. This position involves case support, data gathering, cross-agency coordination, and presenting findings. Hours include holidays and weekends. Compensation: $23 to $34 per hour, on-site in Gulf Shores, AL.

Responsibilities

• Deliver a blend of administrative, strategic, and technical duties to provide analysis and data evaluation that enhance police operations and informed decision making.
• Provide both short-term and long-term crime and intelligence analysis to law enforcement and other city components to help identify ongoing and emerging crime patterns, serious and prolific offenders, and criminal groups.
• Conduct statistical and analytical research using computer statistics programs for quantitative crime analysis.
• Produce statistical reports as directed by the Police Chief for the City Manager, City Council, City departments, law enforcement agencies, community groups, and the public.
• Assist detectives in case development and resolution by integrating data analysis to uncover facts.
• Generate and distribute findings to aid planning of resource deployment for crime prevention and suppression.
• Support efforts to increase apprehensions and case clearance.
• Operate in accordance with established guidelines, procedures, and laws.
• Monitor databases and open-source platforms to ensure compliance with procedures and applicable regulations.
• Attend meetings and maintain liaisons with local, state, and federal analyst professionals.
• Join investigative and patrol briefings as needed to facilitate information flow.
• Develop and maintain database programs for departmental personnel and public audiences.
• Instruct others in crime and intelligence analysis and how to interpret statistical information.
• Create and distribute intelligence bulletins, crime alerts, and other analytical reports.
• Maintain and issue wanted posters and officer safety and awareness items.
• Conduct presentations to departmental personnel and public audiences.
• Gather and analyze crime data for pattern detection, suspect-crime correlations, target-suspect profiles, and crime forecasting.
• Establish methods to gather data from a wide variety of sources and systems.
• Assess the accuracy and reliability of crime data collection and analysis sources and develop more effective methods and sources.
• Submit updated crime information to the command staff on serious crime and crime patterns in a timely manner.
• Compile data to create patrol maps and crash maps; evaluate and interpret information, identify trends, patterns, and relationships among data points.
• Prepare concise but comprehensive reports of findings for police personnel, outside agencies, and the community.
• Analyze telephone records; categorize call activity by caller/recipient, geography, and demographics; perform cross-tabulations to reveal relationships and trends.
• Respond to ad hoc requests for reports or analyses to support CID staff and other police personnel.
• Coordinate with outside law enforcement agencies to exchange data for cross-jurisdictional crimes.
• Monitor social media platforms for intelligence gathering and situational awareness.
• Apply research methods and techniques including descriptive statistics, multivariate statistics, data mining, and knowledge of crime types and modus operandi for gang-related, drug-related, and white-collar crime; understand requirements for intelligence file creation, retention, dissemination, and purging.
• Be prepared for occasional overtime and flexible hours, including reporting early or staying late, holidays, and weekends.
• Maintain confidentiality about information learned on the job and handle sensitive information appropriately.
• Prepare for court presentations and communicate clearly during testimony.

Requirements

• Knowledge of research methods and techniques, descriptive statistics, multivariate statistical methods, data mining, and understanding of crimes and MO across gang-related, drug-related, and white-collar crime; familiarity with intelligence file creation, retention, dissemination, and purging.
• Availability for occasional overtime and flexible hours, including holidays and weekends.
• Commitment to confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
• Ability to prepare for court presentations and testify clearly and articulately.
