The Travelers Companies, Inc. is seeking a Data Engineer I to design, build, and operationalize data pipelines and enterprise data solutions that support artificial intelligence, machine learning, and business intelligence initiatives while upholding governance, security, and data quality. The role focuses on advancing Travelers' analytics capabilities through data-driven storytelling and cross-functional collaboration.
Position Summary
The selected candidate will contribute to expanding Travelers' analytics landscape by designing, constructing, and deploying data pipelines that enable consistent access to trusted data. This role emphasizes collaboration across teams to turn data into actionable insights while maintaining strong governance and security practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and deploy complex data solutions, troubleshoot issues, apply data transformations, and implement data cleansing and quality improvements.
- Design data solutions aligned with business needs and analytic goals.
- Assess data sources to determine value and identify data to include in analytic processes.
- Incorporate core data management practices including governance, security, and data quality.
- Collaborate within and across teams to support delivery and educate end users on data products and the analytic environment.
- Analyze data and systems to identify defects and incidents of moderate complexity and implement appropriate resolutions.
- Test data movement, transformation code, and data components to ensure reliability.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related STEM field, or equivalent education or work experience.
- Six years of related experience, plus an additional two years of software or data engineering experience.
- Hands-on experience building data pipelines using AWS services (S3, Lambda, IAM) and Databricks.
- Hands-on programming and development experience with Python and PySpark.
- Experience with ETL development in data lake and data warehouse environments, preferably Snowflake.
- Proficient use of cloud platforms, programming languages, and software engineering practices.
- Ability to deliver work at a steady, predictable pace, decompose tasks into small batch releases, and participate in tradeoff discussions.
- Demonstrated domain expertise with the ability to understand technical concepts and in-depth knowledge of the relevant systems.
- Strong problem solving and debugging skills to identify sources of issues in unfamiliar code or systems and address repetitive problems.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interaction with team members and business partners.
- Intermediate leadership skills with a record of self-motivation and personal growth.

Compensation
Salary range: USD 109,300.00 to 180,200.00 per year. The actual salary will be determined by factors including the scope and complexity of the role, location, and the candidate's skills, education, credentials, and experience.
